Independent Lab Assignments

MIC 102E Culinary Arts
Independent Lab Assignments
In addition to the in-class activities, you will learn more Excel skills on your own. They include creating
charts and formulas with cell references.
To do these assignments, you will read and/or listen to the trainings. The trainings come with
instructions in audio and text transcript. To listen to the instruction, use either a speaker or a headset.
The Computer Center offers headsets for rent.
At the end, you will have one Excel book with two sheets.

You will learn creating Excel charts based on data in tables.
1. First, go to the Microsoft training Web site at http://office.microsoft.com/enus/training/CR010047968.aspx
2. From the list of trainings, go to Charts I: How to create a chart in Excel 2007
3. Read and/or listen to the training.
4. Open Excel on your computer. After reading/listening to each page of training, “play”
with the skills you learned. Do not submit the Excel sheet from you training.
5. Open a new Excel book. (File  New or
button  New)
6. Save it as Independent Lab Assignments by first_name last_name. Use your official
name.
7. Change the sheet name from Sheet 1 to Independent Lab 1. How? Double-click on the
sheet name, during the editing mode, change the name. Then, click any cell to end the
editing mode.

* BTW, do not copy the numbers above. Instead, make up your own numbers. Use the
same column and row headings.
9. Based on your table, create three charts.
• A 2D cluster,
• Another one with rows/columns switched, and
• A 3D chart with a chart title.
For example:

Continue on the Independent Lab Hour 2 and 3.
Independent Lab Hour 2 & 3
You will learn creating a new table based on an existing table. The key concept is cell reference
in formula, e.g. =A1+B1. Here, A1 refers to the cell A1 and its content. The content of the cell
A1 is added with the content of the cell B1. The outcome is stored in the cell that contains the
formula.
First, let’s review and learn about cell referencing.
1. Go to the Microsoft training Web site at http://office.microsoft.com/enus/training/CR010047968.aspx
2. From the list of trainings, go to Get to know Excel 2007: Enter formulas
3. Read and/or listen to the training. Pay closer attention to Cell Referencing.
4. Open Excel on your computer. After reading/listening to each page of the training,
“play” with the skills you learned. Do not submit the Excel sheet from you training.
5. Open Independent Lab Assignments by first_name last_name.
6. Change the sheet name from Sheet 2 to Independent Lab 2.
7. On Independent Lab 2 sheet, add a data table by copying and pasting the table from
Independent Lab 1 sheet.
8. In a cell bellow the table, type in: Projected Sales Increase Rate.
9. In the next cell, enter 7.5%.
10. Then create a new table titled ABC Café Sales Report using formulas for the numbers.
The detail instruction is below. First, take a look at an example below:

The table with data
derived from formulas.
a. Type in the table title and column and row headings.
b. The numbers in the second table are from formulas such as =C3+(C3*D$7).
• The cell C3 contains the original number in the first table (e.g. 100),
• The cell D7 is the rate (e.g. 7.5%),
• (C3*D$7) gives the increment amount, and
• The $ sign in front of 7 indicates an absolute reference.
c. Do not copy the numbers. You must use formulas in the second table. Otherwise, you
will get no credit for the assignment.
Once you complete, save the Excel book file.
Submit the assignment file in the Day 9-10-11 Independent Lab page in CANVAS.
If you have any question, email the instructor from CANVAS.
