DesktopComputers
Students:
Student computers are replaced (“refreshed”) on approximately a three year cycle. Funding for student computer replacement is from Universal Technology Fees, Computer Lab Fees and occasionally from some Instructional Computing Equipment funds. With the recent increase in UT Fee maximum, fee funds have been adequate to support an excellent replacement cycle. Replacement is by Dell or Apple model. The goal is to have no more than three Dell models in use, for efficiency in support and in imaging. Fewer than normal PC replacements were done in 2011‐12 because of the “end of life” of Dell 790s. We will replace a higher than usual number in summer 2012 when the new models are available. For the Apple systems, replacement is based on operating system compatibility. For example, many replacements are being done in 2011‐12 to accommodate the upcoming move to the LION operating system. Concentrating on Mac replacements during 2011‐12 allows us to have consistency within each platform while maintaining our 3 to 4 year cycle. The table below shows actual and planned expenses for student computer replacements. Calculated Student Computer Replacement Costs #Supported Replace Dell Apple cost per Est Cost 1,088 311

With the implementation of the Citrix system we reduced the need to replace faculty and staff systems. Since processing is done on servers, rather than on desktops, little processing power is needed on desktops. Dell computers removed from the student network have more than adequate power to serve as Citrix stations. Dell 755s with 4 Gb RAM will be replaced on student networks in summer, 2012, and will be immediately deployed to replace our older faculty and staff systems. Current faculty and staff installations are using Dell 745s with some 760s in high demand areas. InfrastructureReplacement
A permanent level state operating budget, 011 2A15, of about $85,000 annually, is available for administrative (faculty and staff use) infrastructure replacement and for a few necessary new faculty‐
staff desktop computer purchases. This fund covers replacement of backbone and edge switches on the admin networks. 2010 Planning Technology Appendix 3 Servers are purchased with four year support. Most run happily after that support expires and are replaced when they no longer handle current operating s systems well. Student network servers, switches and other infrastructure are funded by ongoing grants from the Universal Technology Fee and by annual allocations from the “computer lab fee” (CL fee). Printers
Our printer support, through QBS, provides all parts and labor for maintaining the fleet of HP laser printers, both for student and admin use. With this contract we find that printers last for many years. Hence we do not have a scheduled replacement cycle for printers. All printers are networked. Student network printer replacements are from CL or UT funds. For faculty and staff networks, printer replacements are from departmental, or college instructional computing equipment, budgets.
