Butler, Alan

Alan, "Moose" brings with him a wealth of knowledge and experience, not only about automotive
technology, but also about life. He is an ASE Master Technician and ASE Certified Service
Consultant, also holding CA Smog Inspector and Repair licenses and is a Certified Advanced Tire
Technology Instructor with the Tire Industry Association. Moose, (really, he likes to be called that)
truly has cars in his blood.
Mr. Moose first began working on cars at the age of eight years old. By the age of fifteen he began
his professional career repairing brakes on Saturday mornings, and assembling motorcycles after
school. After earning his Associate degree in Auto Tech at City College, he transferred to SDSU,
where he received his Bachelor’s degree in Industrial Arts. His passion to teach began in 10th grade
when he started Auto Shop classes and realized that there was a need for competent knowledgeable
teachers. He set out to become the best technician and then moved those skills into teaching. Life
being what is, it took another forty years before he could actually begin teaching. It has been over
ten years now and he enjoys every minute. He truly feels that there is no greater joy than when he
helps a student grasp a concept they have been struggling with. When he sees “that light come on”
he gets goosebumps; every time.
Moose has worked at local independent shops, dealerships, and national companies over the past
forty years, and has successfully managed two of his own businesses.
Alan is a San Diego native and loves enjoying all of the outdoor activities this area has to offer,
especially off-roading in his Jeep, camping, riding his motorcycle and flying radio-controlled gliders.
