I. COURSE DESCRIPTION:
This short-format workshop provides exchange students with the basic contents needed to
place Catalan language and culture in its historical, linguistic, cultural and national context.
Languages in which the course will be taught: English, Spanish and some Catalan.

o The formation of Catalonia
o The splendour (up to 1714)

o Origin, formation and evolution of the Catalan language
o The Catalan communication area
o Catalan on the Internet
o Catalan in the world
The culture:
o The arts and the letters (architecture, painting, literature...)
o Folklore and traditions
o Cuisine
The society:
o The government institutions
o Barcelona, the capital city of Catalonia and a pole of touristic, cultural and
university attraction
o Values and idiosyncrasy of the Catalans
o Symbols: the flag, the anthem...
The territory:
o Catalonia and the other Catalan-speaking countries
o The most emblematic places
Language Workshop:
o Basic notions of oral language: introducing oneself, greeting, asking for basic
information

Minimal number of students per group: 10 students
VI. ATTENDANCE POLICY AND CERTIFICATES:
Students will receive a certificate of attendance provided they have a minimum attendance
of 80%. Certificates can be collected from the Idiomes UPF administrative office (Roger de
Llúria building, office 40.175).

A Quick Glance at Catalonia

I. COURSE DESCRIPTION:
This unit, together with a second unit “What Else Should I know about Catalan Culture?”, is
aimed at students coming to UPF in September, who are interested in getting to know the
basics of the Catalan language, culture and nation, in order to become familiar with and
understand their new host country.
Languages in which the course will be taught: English, Spanish and some Catalan.

The current situation of the Catalan language (the press, new technologies, society, and so on)

Sessions include a 15 min. break at 12 noon (approximately).
