Content
Thiscourseisanintroductiontotheconceptsofstress,deformationandstraininsolidmaterials.Basic
relationshipsbetweenloads,stresses,anddeflectionsofstructuralandmachineelementssuchasrods,
shaftsandbeamsaredeveloped.TheloadͲcarryingcapacityoftheseelementsundertension,compression,
torsion,bendingandshearforcesareconsidered.
CourseFormat
Therewillbedailylectures.Youractiveparticipationisessentialinmakingtheclassasuccess.Readthe
materialbeforeclassandcomeequippedwithquestions.
CourseͲlevelLearningOutcomes
Aftersuccessfulcompletionofthiscourse,studentswillbeabletodothefollowing:
1.DescribetheconceptsofnormalandshearstressandstrainandinterpretstressͲstraindiagrams.
2.Solveproblemsinvolvingthemechanicalpropertiesofmaterialsthataresubjecttovarioustypesof
loadings(axialload,torsion,bending,transverseshear,combinedloadings),andcalculateresultingstresses
andstrainsandmaterialdeformation.
3.Computethestressandstrainstatesbothanalyticallyandgraphicallyatvariousorientationangles.
4.Computetheprincipalnormalandmaximumshearstresses.
5.Drawtheshearforceandbendingmomentdiagramsanddeterminethemaximumshearandmaximum
bendingmomentforvarioustypesofbeamloadings.
6.Computethedeflectionofbeamsundervariousloadings.

Therewillbeabout5(maybe6)oneͲhourexams.Imaynotgradealloftheexams.Imayonlygradepartsof
anexam.Thisisunlikelybutpossible.Thelowestscorewillbedropped.Theexamswillallcountequally(no
'special'finalexam).Therewon'tbeanymakeupexams.Thedatespostedaretentativebutexamswill
typicallybeheldonFridays.
Homework
Homeworkwillbedueonceaweek.Theproblemsetswillbeavailableontheclasswebsite.Solutionswill
bepostedonthewebsiteaswell.Thelowesthomeworkscorewillbedropped.
Yourhomeworkmustbeturnedinontime.Latehomeworkwillhaveadeductionof20%/day.
Istronglyrecommendyouworkonyourhomeworkwithotherstodiscussanyproblemsyouencounter.
Project
Aspartofyourtermprojectyouwill(a)photographexamplesof‘MOMinaction’,and(b)shareyour
findingsinashortpresentationattheendofthequarter.Detailswillbepostedonthewebsiteand
announcedinclass.

timetoabsorbandorganizethematerialwearestudying.
4.Practice,practice,practice!Onexamdayitwillnotbeenoughtodoaproblem,youwillhavetodoit
