Instructional Technology Resources – 2014 – 2015 Teaching Online Courses The Online Teaching & Learning Committee (OTLC) considers it critical for department chairs and coordinators to require teacher preparation and experience before assigning online courses so that students can experience the same rigor and quality expected in face-to-face courses. The Ensuring Quality Online Instruction document outlines preparation that will meet those requirements. Blackboard Course Management System Blackboard is the only District provided and supported CMS. A course container is automatically created for every section of every course we offer. To access your course container(s), go to https://gcccd.blackboard.com/ and use your Colleague ID and six digit birthdate as a password. Please take a moment to change your Blackboard password. If you don’t students can easily search the web for your birth date and sabotage your classes. To learn how to change your Blackboard password go to: http://cuyamacaonline.blogspot.com/2009/01/urgent-modify-your-personal-settings-in.html Training Rhonda Bauerlein regularly conducts workshops in a variety of instructional technology areas, which includes the effective use of Blackboard as a supplement to classroom instruction, or as an online course management tool. She is also available, by appointment, to assist individual faculty with Blackboard related issues. The best way to reach her is via email: [email protected]. Rhonda also maintains a blog with weekly updates to technology and/or online and hybrid teaching issues. To subscribe, go to: cuyamaca-online.blogspot.com. Finally, there is a website identifying faculty resources at http://www.gcccd.edu/online/faculty/default.html that may answer many of your questions. Help Desk The help desk is staffed during regular business hours, however, faculty and students are encouraged to call and leave a voice message or email anytime. The help desk support line makes use of a telephone triage system that transfers your call to the next available support team member. We do this to ensure your call is answered and your request is processed when one of us is out of the office. We do our best to answer calls as they come in but occasionally, some are sent to voice mail. Please leave a message so we can return your call. You may contact the help desk at (619) 660-4395 or [email protected]. Important: Calling the Help Desk Please use the general help desk telephone number to report problems rather than dial the telephone extension for a specific support person. This helps to ensure a timely resolution to your problem when one of us is out of the office. It also allows us to maintain a centralized list of tasks that are time-stamped as they come in. The entire support team has access to this list. Email the Help Desk Please use the general help desk email address to report problems rather than email a specific support person. The [email protected] email is sent to the entire support team and it includes the LTRC dean. Contacting the group ensures a timely resolution to your problem when one of us is out of the office. When to call the help desk: Instructors: To report technology problems in a Smart Classroom/Lab, Faculty Office or Faculty Work Room; report problems with Campus E-mail, the GCCCD Network, or the Wireless Network. Students: Problems related to: WebAdvisor, Blackboard, Campus E-mail, GCCCD Network and the Wireless Network. http://www.cuyamaca.edu/helpdesk/ Creating a Webpage For assistance establishing a web page to support your teaching or for assistance maintaining a department web page, contact Rocky Rose at x4466 or [email protected]. Checking Laptop/Data Projector While all of the classrooms are equipped with technology, sometimes it is necessary to check out a laptop and data projector for single use.
