The Game
The Liberty men’s basketball team returns to action, Saturday, continuing Big South play
against Charleston Southern. The Buccaneers enter the contest atop the conference’s
South Division and are the only team that remains undefeated in league play (6-0). Tipoff
is slated for 8 p.m., following a matchup between the Lady Flames and Longwood at 5
p.m. Liberty’s clash with the Buccaneers will air live on the Liberty Channel, ESPN3 and
MASN.
What to Watch for
- Liberty has won five straight meetings against the Buccaneers in the Vines Center.
The Flames own an average scoring margin of 15 points in those five contests. The last
time Charleston Southern left the Vines Center victorious occurred during Barclay Radebaugh’s first season as head coach on Feb. 11, 2006. That day, the Buccaneers won
decisively, defeating the Flames, 61-45.
- While the Flames lead the conference in three-point field goal percentage defense, they
have struggled at times against teams that shoot a high volume of treys. The Buccaneers
are highly formidable from downtown, pacing the Big South in three-point field goal percentage (37.2) and three-pointers per game (9.6). On the flip side, the Flames are second
in three-point shooting (37.0), while knocking down approximately seven three-pointers
per contest (third in Big South). Meanwhile, the Buccaneers are eighth in three-point field
goal defense, allowing opponents to shoot 33.9 percent from long range. Look for the
three-ball to be a constant theme throughout the contest.
- Containing Charleston Southern point guard will be a key to the Flames’ success, Saturday. The sophomore floor general is sixth in the Big South in scoring (15.0 ppg) and is
second in assists, averaging 5.6 per game. Last season, Nimley averaged 18.7 points in
three games against the Flames.
- Liberty will need to be strong on the boards against the Buccaneers. Charleston Southern leads the conference in rebounding, grabbing 39.3 boards per game. Although the
Flames have made an improvement in the rebounding department since beginning Big
South play (36.7 rpg in conference games), they will need to be at the top of their game
against the league’s strongest rebounding squad.

Notes and Anecdotes
- Prior to coaching at Charleston Southern, Barclay Radebaugh spent one season at
Queens University in Charlotte, leading the Royals to a 21-8 record (2003-04). Queens
is also where Liberty head coach Dale Layer began his coaching career in 1989. Layer
spent nine seasons at Queens, amassing a 167-87 record and reaching the NCAA Division II Tournament on two occasions, including the Sweet 16 in 1996.
- Liberty and Charleston Southern matched up three times, last season. However, none of
the three meetings took place inside the Vines Center. The two squads played a neutral
site game at Randolph College (Dec. 31, 2011), resulting in an 81-76 victory for the Buccaneers. Liberty then avenged the loss with a 30-foot buzzer beater by Antwan Burrus to
win at Charleston Southern, 75-74 (Feb. 9, 2012). The three-part series ended on Feb.
29, as the No. 4 seed Buccaneers defeated No. 5 Liberty, 88-74, in the quarterfinals of the
2012 Big South Championship.
- The last time Liberty and Charleston Southern played a contest decided by single digits
in the Vines Center was Feb. 9, 2004. The Flames defeated the Bucs in overtime, 71-67.
- Before falling to Charleston Southern, last season, the Flames had reeled off 10 straight
wins against the Buccaneers.
- When the series begain during the 1988-89 season, Charleston Southern was known
as Baptist College, S.C. The school changed its name before the start of the 1990-91
season.

Notes from Liberty’s Game Versus Longwood
- The victory marks Liberty’s (6-14, 2-4 Big South) fourth straight home win against the
Lancers. Still searching for its first Big South victory, Longwood (3-17, 0-6 Big South) is
now 17-9 all-time versus Liberty.
- John Caleb Sanders led the Flames with 20 points, followed by Casey Roberts (12) and
Tavares Speaks (10).
- Karl Ziegler posted a career-high 12 points for Longwood, while Lancers leading scorer
Tristan Carey chipped in 10 tallies.
- The Flames finished with their third best shooting percentage of the season, hitting 28of-53 shots (52.8 percent) from the field. Longwood’s 47 points mark the fewest points
allowed by Dale Layer’s squad this season.
- Liberty’s defense held the Lancers to 30.9 percent shooting (17-of-55). The Flames
outscored the visitors in the paint (38-18), on turnovers (22-7) and off the bench (33-13).
Fast Break
- Liberty’s double overtime tilt against High Point was its first since Feb. 4, 2009, when
the Flames fell at Gardner-Webb, 95-90. The contest also marked Liberty’s first overtime
game of the 2012-13 season and first since Jan. 14, 2012 against Winthrop.
- Against High Point, Tavares Speaks had a career-high 20 points, becoming the third
Flame to post a 20-point game, this season.
- In Liberty’s game against Coastal Carolina, Tomasz Gielo paced the Flames offense
with a career-high 19 points.

- Defensively, the Flames held Coastal Carolina to 29.2 percent shooting (19-of-65),
marking the first time a Liberty opponent has finished under 30.0 percent from the field
since Campbell shot 29.0 percent (18-of-62) in the Flames’ 49-41 regular-season finale
win on Feb. 25, 2012.
- Liberty also held the Chanticleers to 10.0 percent (2-of-20) from three-point range. The
last time the Flames forced a team to miss 90.0 percent of its three-point shots occurred
on Nov. 27, 2010 in a 67-65 overtime win against Chicago State in the South Padre Island
Invitational.
- Since returning to the Flames lineup, this season, Joel Vander Pol has garnered a career
highs in rebounds (11 vs. Union College) and blocks (4 vs. Western Carolina).
- Against Western Carolina (Dec. 31) Liberty won 63-62 despite committing a season-high
24 turnovers. The Flames’ miscues were the most in exactly two years. Liberty committed
25 turnovers in a 64-62 overtime win at Gardner-Webb, on Dec. 31, 2010.
- Liberty is second in the Big South in three-point field goal percentage (36.7) and No.1 in
three-point field goal percentage defense (27.9).
- JR Coronado is third among Big South players in rebounding, grabbing 8.4 boards per
game.
- Liberty defeated Southern Virginia on Dec. 4 to end an eight-game losing skid. Prior to
the victory, the Flames had started the season 0-8 for the first time in school history.
- Liberty was also 0-3 inside the Vines Center for the first time in the facility’s history. Before the win, the Flames had not started 0-3 at home since the 1988-89 season, its first
year in Division I.
- While the Flames are shooting well from the perimeter, the paint has not been as kind.

effort by Evan Gordon at Coastal Carolina on Feb 3, 2011.
- Marshall’s six three-pointers were also the most since Gordon posted the same number
in Liberty’s 2010-11 season opener against Virginia Intermont (Nov. 12, 2010).
- Despite the defeat against the Panthers, Liberty finished the contest with 12 three-pointers, the most since knocking down 15 in a 95-80 victory at Charleston Southern during the

2011-12 Highlights
- After starting Big South Conference play 0-6, the Flames turned things around winning
nine of their last 12 conference contests to earn a first round bye in the 2012 Big South
Championship.
- For the second straight year, Jesse Sanders was named Big South All-Conference first
team. The senior finished third in the country in assists, averaging 8.0 per game. Sanders concluded his four-year career as a Flame with 1,235 points (15th in Liberty history),
815 rebounds (5th) and 727 assists (1st).
- With time winding down in Liberty’s game at Charleston Southern (Feb. 9, 2012), Antwan Burrus hit a buzzer-beating three-pointer from 30 feet, helping the Flames cement a
75-74 victory. The long range basket was featured at No. 2 on ESPN SportsCenter’s Top
10 Plays that night.
