The Game
The Liberty men’s basketball team returns to the Vines Center, Tuesday night, playing
host to Big South newcomer Longwood. The Flames are looking to bounce back from
back-to-back losses in conference play, as they off with a 3-16 Lancers squad seeking
its first Big South victory. Tipoff for the Commonwealth clash is slated for 7 p.m., with the
contest airing live on the Liberty Channel, ESPN3 and MASN2.
What to Watch for
- Although he surpassed the 700-point mark for his Liberty career, the Flames’ No. 2
scorer John Caleb Sanders posted just six points against Presbyterian, Saturday. Look for
the junior to bounce back in front of the home crowd on Tuesday.
- Tavares Speaks continues to be a consistent scorer for the Flames, posting double digit
scoring figures in eight consecutive contests. During the span, Speaks has averaged 13.8
ppg. Will Speaks make it nine straight inside the Vines Center?
- Despite dropping its first five conference contests, the Lancers have lost by an average
margin of approximately nine points against Big South opponents, including a three-point
defeat at UNC Asheville, Saturday. Expect another close game in the Vines Center.
- In his last four contests, Davon Marshall has recorded a total of three assists, a far cry
from his season-high of nine on Dec. 28. Perhaps the New York native can return to form
and find the open man on Tuesday.
- While he has appeared in just 10 of Liberty’s 19 games averaging 14.4 minutes per
game, Joel Vander Pol is already second on the team in blocks (10) and trails only JR
Coronado in rebounds per game (6.0 rpg). Look for the center to continue to impact the
post versus Longwood.

Notes and Anecdotes
- The Flames and Lancers share one common non-conference opponent, this season,
with both teams matching up against Georgetown. The Hoyas defeated Liberty, 68-59
(Nov. 14) and prevailed against Longwood, 89-53, Dec. 10.
- In conference play, the two squads have each faced UNC Asheville and Coastal Carolina. The Lancers fell to the Chanticleers, 80-72 (Jan. 5), while most recently dropping a
narrow 68-65 decision at Asheville, Saturday. The Flames’ opened the conference slate
against the Bulldogs, falling 83-69 (Jan. 5). Liberty’s lone conference win, a 64-56 victory
over Coastal Carolina, occurred on Jan. 12.
- Despite not being in the same conference until this season, Liberty and Longwood have
met twice in a season 12 out of 13 years since the all-time series began during the 197778 season. The lone season the two squads faced off just one time during the year was
the 1981-82 season. That year, the Lancers won decisively, 87-61 (Jan. 23, 1978).
- While the Lancers have defeated the Flames on three occasions under Gillian, Longwood has yet to pick up a win in the Vines Center during the coach’s tenure.

Notes from Liberty’s Game Versus Presbyterian College
- With the defeat, Liberty falls to 5-14 on the year and 1-4 in Big South play. Presbyterian
moves to 4-15 overall and 1-4 in conference play, knotting the all-time series at 6-6.
- Davon Marshall paced the Flames with 14 points, followed by Casey Roberts (13) and
Tavares Speaks (11). John Caleb Sanders scored six points to surpass the 700-point
mark for his Liberty career. He now has 704 career points.
- Khalid Mutakabbir posted a game-high 24 points for the Blue Hose, while Jordan Downing added 14 tallies. Joshua Clyburn finished the night with a double-double, recording 11
points and 10 rebounds.
- The Flames shot 41.5 percent (22-of-53) from the field, while Presbyterian shot 42.9
percent (21-of-49).
- Despite the loss, Liberty outscored the Blue Hose in the paint (28-12) and off the bench
(24-6). However, the difference came at the three-point arc and the free throw line, where
PC knocked down eight treys and 18 free throws.
Fast Break
- Liberty’s double overtime tilt against High Point was its first since Feb. 4, 2009, when
the Flames fell at Gardner-Webb, 95-90. The contest also marked Liberty’s first overtime
game of the 2012-13 season and first since Jan. 14, 2012 against Winthrop.
- Against High Point, Tavares Speaks had a career-high 20 points, becoming the third
Flame to post a 20-point game, this season.
- In Liberty’s game against Coastal Carolina, Tomasz Gielo paced the Flames offense
with a career-high 19 points.

- Defensively, the Flames held Coastal Carolina to 29.2 percent shooting (19-of-65),
marking the first time a Liberty opponent has finished under 30.0 percent from the field
since Campbell shot 29.0 percent (18-of-62) in the Flames’ 49-41 regular-season finale
win on Feb. 25, 2012.
- Liberty also held the Chanticleers to 10.0 percent (2-of-20) from three-point range. The
last time the Flames forced a team to miss 90.0 percent of its three-point shots occurred
on Nov. 27, 2010 in a 67-65 overtime win against Chicago State in the South Padre Island
Invitational.
- Since returning to the Flames lineup, this season, Joel Vander Pol has garnered a career
highs in rebounds (11 vs. Union College) and blocks (4 vs. Western Carolina).
- Against Western Carolina (Dec. 31) Liberty won 63-62 despite committing a season-high
24 turnovers. The Flames’ miscues were the most in exactly two years. Liberty committed
25 turnovers in a 64-62 overtime win at Gardner-Webb, on Dec. 31, 2010.
- Liberty leads the Big South in three-point field goal percentage (36.7) and in three-point
field goal percentage defense (28.5).
- JR Coronado is third among Big South players in rebounding, grabbing 8.5 boards per
game.
- Liberty defeated Southern Virginia on Dec. 4 to end an eight-game losing skid. Prior to
the victory, the Flames had started the season 0-8 for the first time in school history.
- Liberty was also 0-3 inside the Vines Center for the first time in the facility’s history. Before the win, the Flames had not started 0-3 at home since the 1988-89 season, its first
year in Division I.
- While the Flames are shooting well from the perimeter, the paint has not been as kind.

2011-12 Highlights
- After starting Big South Conference play 0-6, the Flames turned things around winning
nine of their last 12 conference contests to earn a first round bye in the 2012 Big South
Championship.
- For the second straight year, Jesse Sanders was named Big South All-Conference first
team. The senior finished third in the country in assists, averaging 8.0 per game. Sanders concluded his four-year career as a Flame with 1,235 points (15th in Liberty history),
815 rebounds (5th) and 727 assists (1st).
