Edoc – waste transfer
goes digital
Electronic communication has revolutionised the way we
do business. There is one corner of the world of waste,
however, where paper still dominates. But that is about
to change, with the launch in January 2014 of edoc
(electronic duty of care), a new system to create, share,
sign and record waste transfer notes online that is backed
by government bodies and the waste sector.
Is your waste transfer
recording stuck in the past?
Up to now, Waste Transfer Notes (WTNs) – those important
pieces of evidence that legal duty of care has been
properly exercised in handling waste – have largely been
completed by hand, with paper copies kept on file for the
requisite two years or more.
We estimate that around 23 million new WTNs are created
each year, adding up to a mountain of unnecessary paper
and an administrative headache for businesses. Edoc will
enable you to create WTNs securely online, where you can
manage, search, interrogate and retrieve them quickly and
easily. It will reduce unnecessary administration, save you
time and money, and it will save paper and storage space,
bringing further cost benefits. You will be able to generate
reports on the waste transfers you have been involved
in, invaluable for business planning and auditing, and a
great source of information for any business wanting to
identify waste prevention measures and efficiencies that
will benefit the bottom line.
Edoc – key features:
Create a waste transfer note and share
it between parties
Review, edit, sign and store waste
transfer records online
Receive automatic email notifications
when there is an action for your
attention
See a log of actions performed, by
whom and when
Create a season ticket with the option
to include multiple waste types,
containers and collection frequencies
Receive email alerts when a season
ticket is about to expire
Search and retrieve records quickly
and easily
Create downloadable business reports
on the waste transfers you have been
involved in
Use an optional tracking system to see
the fate of your waste
If you are required to report waste tonnages, edoc will
also help you do that.
Who is behind edoc?
Edoc is being developed under a four-year programme cofinanced by the European Commission (LIFE+). It is being
delivered by the Environment Agency in partnership with
the Chartered Institution of Wastes Management (CIWM),
the Northern Ireland Environment Agency, Reconomy (UK)
Ltd, WRAP (Waste & Resources Action Programme) and the
Welsh Government. It has the full support of Defra and the
Scottish Environment Protection Agency (SEPA).
“In an age of electronic communication, waste transfer notes must be among the last bits of paper doing the rounds in
business. Edoc will change all that. It is designed to move the millions of waste transfer notes created across the UK out
of the filing cabinet and onto a secure online system, it will enable client and waste contractor to create, share, sign and
record waste transfers electronically, with all the business efficiencies and benefits that go with it.”
