Liberty FLAMES
(0-7)
Lynchburg, Va. - Vines Center - 3 p.m.
The Game
The Liberty men’s basketball team will try to avoid starting the season 0-8 for the first
time in program history when it welcomes Georgia State to the Vines Center. The Flames
look to avenge last season’s 72-50 loss to the Panthers (Nov. 26, 2011), as they host the
CAA member for the first time. Tipoff is slated for 3 p.m., with the contest airing LIVE on
the Liberty Channel, MASN2 and ESPN3. A tape delay on Comcast Sports South is also
scheduled for 4 p.m.
What to Watch For
- Casey Roberts continues to show he is more than just your average walk-on. The junior
transfer led the Flames with 15 points against Morgan State, Thursday. Roberts is currently the team’s third-leading scorer with 8.3 ppg.
- Tomasz Gielo made his return to the court on Thursday and didn’t disappoint, finishing
with 11 points in 18 minutes. The Poland native will now prepare for his second act against
the Panthers.
- Davon Marshall has been Mr. Consistency, this season, finishing with 12 points or more
in six of Liberty’s seven games. However, he will look to bounce back from three-point
land, where he has shot 35 percent or lower in the last two contests.
- John Caleb Sanders cracked the Top 50 of Liberty’s all-time scoring list with a nine-point
performance against the Bears. With 547 points for his career, the junior will look to boost
his season average of 7.3 ppg as he continues to climb the ladder.
- With a limited post presence due to injuries to Antwan Burrus and Joel Vander Pol, Liberty’s bigs will need to stay out of foul trouble. Sommy Ogukwe has fouled out of two games
this season, while JR Coronado played with four fouls against the Bears on Thursday.

Notes from Liberty’s game with Morgan State
- The Bears improve to 2-3 on the year, while Liberty’s 0-7 start is its second in program
history. Morgan State is now 2-1 in the all-time series.
- Casey Roberts paced the Flames with 15 points. Davon Marshall and Tavares Speaks
each had 12 and 11 tallies, respectively. After missing the first six games due to injury,
Tomasz Gielo returned to the court, posting 11 points in 18 minutes.
- The Flames field goal percentage (43.4) was their highest on the season. Liberty also
gave up the fewest amount of turnovers on the year (14).
Fast Break
- Much like last season, Tomasz Gielo missed the first several weeks due to an injury. During the 2011-12 campaign he made his Liberty debut against MEAC member Hampton,
finishing with a solid nine points in the 74-65 victory. This year, after missing six games, he
returned to the court against another MEAC opponent in Morgan State, posting 11 points.
- Liberty is 0-7 for the first time since the 1977-78 season. The Flames have never started
0-8 in the program’s 40-year history.

Coach’s Comments
“Davon is very experienced and plays two different positions. He played on the third-best
junior college team at the point and shooting guard positions. He was their leading scorer
and is a big game guy. He’s got a great spirit about him. He is a guy that brings toughness,
leadership and the ability to score the ball in many ways.”

Coach’s Comments
“Larry is a team guy, who had a stellar high school career. He is a pure point guard, who
understands the game. He can score the ball and pass it. I like his feel for how he plays
and how he fits our offense.”

Coach’s Comments
“JR is a terrific rebounder who brings a lot of toughness. He is a guy who is very competitive and will work, dive on the floor, he will take charges and be around the ball all the time.
He can score with opportunity and is a guy that could really be a force for us.”
