The Game
Liberty looks to avoid an 0-7 start on Thursday, as the Flames host Morgan State. The
contest marks a rematch of last season’s Sears Bracketbusters matchup in Baltimore,
Md., which resulted in an 81-69 victory for the Bears. Morgan State enters the contest with
a 1-3 record on the year. Tipoff is slated for 7 p.m.
What to Watch For
- After averaging just 5.4 ppg in the first five contests, John Caleb Sanders returned to his
scoring ways last Wednesday against Southern Miss, posting a season-high 15 points.
The Sugar Land, Texas native is just five points shy of cracking the Top 50 of Liberty’s
all-time scoring list.
- With the absence of three key post players, JR Coronado currently accounts for 26.5
percent of the Flames’ rebounding, leading the Flames with an average of 7.8 boards per
game. Coronado has worked his way into the starting lineup, receiving the nod in the last
three contests.
- After a 13-point performance at Georgetown, junior guard Casey Roberts has started
the last three contests. The transfer from Allegany College is currently the Flames’ thirdleading scorer, averaging 7.2 ppg.
- The Flames are looking to avoid starting 0-7 for the second time in program history. Liberty’s 1977-78 campaign was the last time the Flames started a year 0-7.
- Liberty continues to shine from behind the three-point arc, this season. The team is currently tops among Big South squads in three-point field goal percentage (34.7). Davon
Marshall is a big part of the Flames’ downtown production. The junior point guard is currently tied for second in three-pointers per game, averaging nearly three treys per contest.

Notes and Anecdotes
- Liberty is currently 1-1 in BracketBusters rematches. The Flames defeated Niagara, 8681, in its rematch with the Purple Eagles on Dec. 1, 2007. After its second BracketBusters
appearance, Liberty hosted Old Dominion on Nov. 19, 2009, falling to the Monarchs, 7341.
- Last year’s contest marked the first meeting between the two squads in nearly 30 years.
The inaugural matchup took place inside Liberty’s Schilling Center on Jan. 22, 1983 during Jeff Meyer’s second season as head coach. Back then, Liberty was still an NAIA institution, approximately five and a half years away from moving to NCAA Division I.
- Liberty holds an 11-6 record over current members of the MEAC. The Flames are 2-0
against Coppin State, 0-1 against Delaware State, 1-0 against Florida A&M, 2-2 against
Hampton, 2-0 versus Howard, 2-0 versus Maryland-Eastern Shore, 1-1 against Morgan
State and 1-2 against Norfolk State.
- Following Thursday’s game, Morgan State will head to nearby Lexington, Va. to take
another Big South squad in VMI. The Saturday tipoff between the Bears and the Keydets
is slated for 1 p.m.
- Liberty is set for another BracketBusters rematch, this year, as the Flames will travel to
New Rochelle, N.Y., on Dec. 18 to take on Iona. Liberty hosted the Gaels in a nationally
televised contest during the 2011 Sears BracketBusters (Feb. 19, 2011), falling 77-57.

Last Time Out Against Morgan State
- Jesse Sanders paced all scorers with 21 points on 6-for-8 shooting from the field and
9-of-10 from the foul line. The Sugar Land, Texas, native’s point total allowed him to surpass 1,200 for his career. Sanders finished his career with 1,235 total points.
- Antwan Burrus chipped in 13 points for the Flames, while John Caleb Sanders went
4-of-6 from behind the three-point arc to finish with 12.
- Aric Brooks led Morgan State with 18 points, followed by Justin Black and DeWayne
Jackson, who each had 15 tallies.
- Despite shooting an average of 57.1 percent from the field in the previous three games,
the Flames finished the afternoon shooting 46.9 percent (23-of-49).
- The Bears shot 55.1 percent (27-of-49), including 61.5 percent (8-of-13) from outside.

Notes from the Progressive Legends Classic
- After posting 12 points in each of his first four games, Davon Marshall got over the hump
in Liberty’s game against Sam Houston State (Nov. 20), posting a season-high 15 points.
Marshall’s eight-point game the next day against Southern Miss snapped the junior’s fivegame double-digit scoring streak.

- In Liberty’s game versus William & Mary, Andrew Smith came off the bench for the
Flames, grabbing a career-high eight rebounds.
- Liberty’s 18 turnovers at Richmond were the most since the Flames committed 19 miscues at Coastal Carolina (Feb. 3, 2011) during the 2010-11 campaign. The most turnovers
committed by Liberty in a single game last season was 17, doing so against VMI, UNC
Wilmington and Randolph College.
- Liberty’s 42 points against Richmond is the lowest point total since the Flames posted 41
against Old Dominion (Nov. 19, 2009) during Layer’s first season as head coach.
- Injury Report: Antwan Burrus and Tomasz Gielo are currently out of the Flames lineup
due to injury. Center Joel Vander Pol is coming off back surgery and is expected to miss
the early part of the year.
- Antwan Burrus is on pace this year to become Liberty’s 23rd member of its 1,000-point
club, needing 234 tallies to accomplish the feat.
- Sitting in fourth all-time in program history with 104 blocks, Burrus needs nine more to
become No. 2 on the listing.
- Liberty lost two of its starters from the 2011-12 season to graduation – David Minaya and
Jesse Sanders. Together, the duo combined for 35 percent of the team’s offense.

2011-12 Highlights
- After starting Big South Conference play 0-6, the Flames turned things around winning
nine of its last 12 conference contests to earn a first round bye in the 2012 Big South
Championship.
- For the second straight year, Jesse Sanders was named Big South All-Conference first
team. The senior finished third in the country in assists, averaging 8.0 per game. Sanders concluded his four-year career as a Flame with 1,235 points (15th in Liberty history),
815 rebounds (5th) and 727 assists (1st).
