Georgetown HOYAS
(1-0, 0-0 BIG EAST)
Washington, D.C. - Verizon Center - 7 p.m.
The Game
Liberty steps back on to the court, Wednesday night, to take on BIG EAST power Georgetown in the Washington regional of the 2012 Progressive Legends Classic. The contest
marks the first-ever meeting between the Flames and the Hoyas and will be broadcast
LIVE on MASN and ESPN3. Liberty is seeking its first-ever win over a BIG EAST squad,
currently holding a 0-8 mark against the conference’s schools.Tipoff is slated for 7 p.m.
What to Watch for
- Liberty is currently missing three of its primary post players – Antwan Burrus, Tomasz
Gielo and Joel Vander Pol. In the meantime, forwards Sommy Ogukwe, JR Coronado and
Andrew Smith are being asked to carry the load inside. The trio accounts for 44 percent
of Liberty’s rebounding (28-of-64).
- John Caleb Sanders is looking to bounce back from a tough start behind the arc. Last
season, Sanders paced the Flames with seven three-point field goals after the first two
games. This year, he is 1-of-6 from downtown. Sanders is known for stepping up in big
games, posting 18 points against Texas A&M during the 2K Sports Classic Benefiting
Coaches vs. Cancer, last season.
- Liberty is getting some support off the bench from a few surprising faces. Andrew Smith
stepped up on Monday, grabbing a career-high eight rebounds. Walk-on Casey Roberts
also chipped in 11 points, which included a pair of back-to-back three-pointers.
- After a tough start at Richmond, Tavares Speaks rebounded against William & Mary on
Monday, pacing the Flames with 15 tallies. A senior, Speaks displayed on-court leadership
against the Tribe and will look to do the same against the Hoyas.
- Turnovers were once again an issue for the Flames on Monday, as they committed 17
Liberty is averaging 17.5 turnovers while forcing 12 miscues. In its first two games, last
year, Dale Layer’s squad averaged 13.5 turnovers while forcing 16.5 per game.

- Head Coach Dale Layer is 2-3 all-time against BIG EAST opponents. Wednesday’s
game marks the third BIG EAST member Layer has coached against during his head
coaching career. He is currently 0-2 against Notre Dame and 2-1 versus USF. Layer’s last
victory against a BIG EAST opponent occurred during his time at Colorado State, when
the Rams defeated USF, 66-65 (Dec. 22, 2003).
- Prior to returning to Liberty to become the school’s eighth head coach, Layer spent the
2008-09 season as an assistant at Marquette under Buzz Williams. That year, the Golden
Eagles swept the Hoyas, defeating them in Milwaukee, 94-82 (Jan. 31, 2009), and inside
the Verizon Center, 78-72 (Feb. 21, 2009).
- Liberty will make two trips to the Washington, D.C. area this year. The Flames will return
to the nation’s capital on Dec. 15 to take on MEAC member Howard.
- The Flames aren’t the only Big South squad the Hoyas will face this year. Georgetown is
also scheduled to host conference newcomer Longwood on Dec. 10.
- The Flames are 0-8 against current members of the BIG EAST. Liberty is 0-1 against
DePaul, 0-2 against Notre Dame, 0-1 versus Providence and 0-3 against Seton Hall and
0-1 against USF.

Notes from Liberty’s game against William & Mary
- The matchup was a tale of two halves. Liberty finished the first half shooting 59.3 percent
(16-of-27) from the field, while holding William & Mary to 31.6 percent shooting (6-of-19).
The Flames also shot 66.7 percent (4-of-6) from behind the three-point arc in the first half.
William & Mary went 0-for-7 from downtown in the opening stanza.
- The tides turned in the second half. William & Mary shot 60.0 percent (15-of-25) from
the field, while holding Liberty to 22.6 percent (7-of-31) after halftime. The Tribe’s sharp
shooting in the second half included a 4-of-8 effort from the three-point line.
- Liberty outscored William & Mary in the paint, 21-12, and held a 19-9 advantage in rebounds during the first half. However, in the second half, the Tribe won the battle in the
paint, 22-8, and on the boards, 24-15.
Fast Break
- Liberty is the second Big South squad to compete in the Legends Classic. GardnerWebb was a participant in the tournament in 2010.
- Liberty’s 18 turnovers at Richmond were the most since the Flames committed 19 miscues at Coastal Carolina (Feb. 3, 2011) during the 2010-11 campaign. The most turnovers
committed by Liberty in a single game last season was 17, doing so against VMI, UNC
Wilmington and Randolph College.
- Liberty’s 42 points against Richmond is the lowest point total since the Flames posted 41
against Old Dominion (Nov. 19, 2009) during Layer’s first season as head coach.
- Injury Report: Antwan Burrus and Tomasz Gielo are currently out of the Flames lineup
die to injury. Center Joel Vander Pol is coming off back surgery and is expected to miss
the early part of the year.
- Antwan Burrus is on pace this year to become Liberty’s 23rd member of its 1,000-point
club, needing 234 tallies to accomplish the feat.
- Sitting in fourth all-time in program history with 104 blocks, Burrus needs nine more to
become No. 2 on the listing.
- Liberty lost two of its starters from the 2011-12 season to graduation – David Minaya and
Jesse Sanders. Together, the duo combined for 35 percent of the team’s offense.
- Sommy Ogukwe returns to the Flames’ lineup this season after missing last season due
to injury.
- Liberty will play five of its first six contests on the road, which includes a meeting with

Coach’s Comments
“Jarred is very mature, athletic, long and plays 2-3 different positions. He scores the ball
several different ways and is coming off a really good freshman year at junior college.
He brings toughness, scoring leadership and athleticism to us. He’s a guy that we are
expecting to be really good quickly and we need him to assume some major scoring and
defensive roles for us.”

Coach’s Comments
“Davon is very experienced and plays two different positions. He played on the third-best

and is a big game guy. He’s got a great spirit about him. He is a guy that brings toughness,

Larry Taylor
6-1, 170, Fr., G
Englewood, Fla.
North Port
Coach’s Comments
“Larry is a team guy, who had a stellar high school career. He is a pure point guard, who
understands the game. He can score the ball and pass it. I like his feel for how he plays
and how he fits our offense.”

Coach’s Comments
“JR is a terrific rebounder who brings a lot of toughness. He is a guy who is very competitive and will work, dive on the floor, he will take charges and be around the ball all the time.
He can score with opportunity and is a guy that could really be a force for us.”
