Liberty FLAMES
(0-1, 0-0 Big South)
Lynchburg, Va. - Vines Center - 7 p.m.
The Game
The Liberty men’s basketball team makes its Vines Center debut, Monday night, playing host to William & Mary of the Colonial Athletic Association. The Flames own a 4-2
record over the Tribe since the series began in 2002. The pair met twice in the same week
last season, with Liberty taking the first meeting, 75-72, inside Kaplan Arena (Nov. 14,
2011). William & Mary returned the favor at the Vines Center six days later, edging the
Flames 65-64. Game time for the seventh meeting is slated for 7 p.m.
What to Watch for
- Liberty is 31-9 all-time in home openers, including 18-4 all-time when playing its first
game of the season in the Vines Center. The Flames have won seven straight home openers. The last time Liberty dropped a home opener was on Nov. 19, 2004, when the Flames
fell to New Hampshire, 59-58.
- Liberty will no doubt look to reduce the amount of turnovers against the Tribe. The
Flames’ 18 miscues at Richmond are the most since the 2010-11 season (19 at Coastal
Carolina, Feb. 3, 2011). In the two meetings against William & Mary last season, Dale
Layer’s squad averaged 11 turnovers.
- The Flames are also looking to bounce back from their third-lowest scoring total during
Layer’s coaching tenure. Liberty’s 42 points against Richmond is the lowest point total
since the Flames posted 41 against Old Dominion (Nov. 19, 2009) during Layer’s first
season as head coach.
- John Caleb Sanders would love to forget the conclusion of last year’s meeting with William & Mary inside the Vines Center, missing back-to-back free throws which allowed the
Tribe to hang on for the 65-64 victory. Last season, the Sugar Land, Texas native averaged 12 ppg in games against William & Mary. If he surpasses that mark in Monday’s
matchup, don’t call it a comeback.
- Point guard Davon Marshall certainly has some big shoes to fill at the No. 1 spot. Against
Richmond, he proved he could handle the pressure, displaying his scoring ability with a
team-high 12 points. With his Liberty debut behind him, he should be well prepared for
his second act.

Notes and Anecdotes
- The Tribe played three contests in the Vines Center, last season, participating in the 2K
Sports Classic Benefiting Coaches vs. Cancer (Nov. 18-20). William & Mary fell to Lehigh
(82-57) and Eastern Kentucky (63-44) before edging the Flames, 65-64.
- All four contests between the two squads in the Vines Center have been determined by
three possessions or less. Of the four games two were decided by one point, while another resulted in an 80-74 double overtime win for Liberty. The Flames largest margin of
victory against William & Mary in the Vines Center occurred on Dec. 18. 2010, when they
defeated the Tribe, 71-62.
- William & Mary is 2-5 all-time in the Vines Center, a record which includes neutral site
contests against South Carolina State, Eastern Kentucky and Lehigh. While the Tribe
picked up its first-ever win over the Flames in Lynchburg, last season, it was not its first
victory in the Vines Center. William & Mary previously defeated South Carolina State in
the facility on Nov. 28, 2009, as part of Liberty’s Thanksgiving Classic.
- Liberty is 3-1 all-time versus the Tribe in the Vines Center
- Antwan Burrus and John Caleb Sanders each averaged 12 ppg in Liberty’s pair of contests versus William & Mary, last season.
- William & Mary guard Marcus Thorton averaged 16 ppg against the Flames, last year.

will also compete in Texas for the third straight season as they wrap up the Legends Classic in Huntsville, Texas.
Last Time Out Versus William & Mary
- With the Tribe holding a one-point edge after an old-fashioned three-point play by Quinn
McDowell, John Caleb Sanders had a chance to sink the game-winning basket after being fouled at the other end with one second remaining. Unfortunately, the sophomore was
unable to connect on either free throw attempt, as the visitors hung on to win.
- Along with Tavares Speaks’ 13 points, four other Flames finished with double scoring
figures – John Caleb Sanders (12), Jesse Sanders (11), David Minaya (12) and Antwan
Burrus (10). Jesse Sanders narrowly missed a triple double, chipping in 12 rebounds and
seven assists.
- Jesse Sanders achieved a career milestone in the matchup, surpassing the 900-point
mark. The Sugar Land, Texas native reached the mark with two free throws with 6:59 left
in the first half. Sanders concluded his career with 1,235 points.
Notes from Blue-White Scrimmage (Oct. 25, 2012)
- John Caleb Sanders led all scorers on the night with 20 points and 10 rebounds. Sanders shot 7-of-13 from the field, including 2-of-4 from three-point range, while sinking 4-of-6
foul shots.
- With each 20-minute half representing a single game, senior forward Antwan Burrus led
the white-clad Flames to a 30-24 victory over the blue team in Game 1, posting a gamehigh 15 points.
- In Game 2, John Caleb Sanders led the blue squad with 14 points and eight rebounds,
followed by forwards Tomasz Gielo and Sommy Ogukwe, who each had 10 tallies during
the final 20 minutes. Davon Marshall paced the white squad with 12 points, all coming
from behind the three-point arc.
- With the scores of each game combined, the night coincidentally ended in a 65-65 tie.

Coach’s Comments
“Jarred is very mature, athletic, long and plays 2-3 different positions. He scores the ball
several different ways and is coming off a really good freshman year at junior college.
He brings toughness, scoring leadership and athleticism to us. He’s a guy that we are
expecting to be really good quickly and we need him to assume some major scoring and
defensive roles for us.”

Coach’s Comments
“Davon is very experienced and plays two different positions. He played on the third-best
junior college team at the point and shooting guard positions. He was their leading scorer
and is a big game guy. He’s got a great spirit about him. He is a guy that brings toughness,
leadership and the ability to score the ball in many ways.”

Larry Taylor
6-1, 170, Fr., G
Englewood, Fla.
North Port
Coach’s Comments
“Larry is a team guy, who had a stellar high school career. He is a pure point guard, who
understands the game. He can score the ball and pass it. I like his feel for how he plays
and how he fits our offense.”

Coach’s Comments
“JR is a terrific rebounder who brings a lot of toughness. He is a guy who is very competitive and will work, dive on the floor, he will take charges and be around the ball all the time.
He can score with opportunity and is a guy that could really be a force for us.”
