Cisco CRS-1 Fabric Chassis Integrated Switch
Controller Card Installation Tasks
First Published: June 23, 2010

The Cisco CRS-1 Fabric Chassis Integrated Switch Shelf Controller (SC) Card supports 22 Gigabit
Ethernet (GE) ports for control plane connectivity between line card and fabric card chassis in a
Cisco CRS-1 multichassis system. The SCGE card controls the shelf management functions for the
fabric chassis and its components.
The fabric chassis has two SCGE card slots. At least one SCGE card must be operational for the chassis
to function. A second SCGE card can be installed for redundancy, so that the loss or removal of a single
shelf controller card does not bring down a chassis.
The SCGE card is available with a 40 GB, 80 GB, or 160 GB SATA hard disk drive. New SCGE cards
are shipped with the hard disk drive preformatted and partitioned with two QNX4 partitions, and one
FAT32 partition. Support for the QNX4 file system was introduced in Cisco IOS XR Release 3.8.2. If
your version of Cisco IOS XR is earlier than Release 3.8.2, you must reformat and partition the hard disk
drive on the new SCGE card to have three FAT32 partitions.
This document explains how to verify the formatting on a new SCGE card hard disk, and how to correct
the formatting if necessary. For the majority of customers, the new SCGE card hard disk is shipped with
the correct formatting and no further action is required. Table 1 describes the changes to this document.

Prerequisites for Formatting an SCGE Card Hard Disk
Prerequisites for Formatting an SCGE Card Hard Disk
The prerequisites for formatting an SCGE card hard disk drive are as follows:
Note
•
Physical access to the router
•
Console access to the Integrated Switch Controller Card
See the “Installing and Removing Fabric Cards and Card Components” section in Cisco CRS-1 Carrier
Routing System Fabric Card Chassis Installation Guide for instructions on how to remove an SCGE card
from, or insert an SCGE card into the Cisco CRS-1 Series Router Fabric Chassis.
Verifying the Format of the SCGE Card Hard Disk
Perform the following steps to verify the format of a new SCGE card for a Cisco CRS-1 multichassis
system.
Step 1
Enter the show version command in EXEC mode to verify the version of Cisco IOS XR on your CRS-1
multichassis system:
RP/0/RP0/CPU0:dublin-dsc# show version
Cisco IOS XR Software, Version 3.8.2[00]
Copyright (c) 2009 by Cisco Systems, Inc.
…
Step 2
Enter the show media location command in ADMIN mode to verify the current state of the disk storage
media. The following example shows the output for a hard disk with two QNX4 partitions and one FAT32
partition:
RP/0/RP0/CPU0:dublin-dsc# admin
RP/0/RP0/CPU0:dublin-dsc(admin)# show media location F0/SC0/CPU0

Step 3
If the hard disk has not been formatted, see the “Formatting a New SCGE Card Hard Disk” section on
page 3.
If the hard disk has been formatted, verify that the partitioning is correct for your version of Cisco IOS
XR. Table 2 lists the correct partitioning for each Cisco IOS XR Release. If the hard disk is formatted
correctly for your version of Cisco IOS XR then no further action is required.

Formatting a New SCGE Card Hard Disk
Perform the following steps to format a new, unformatted SCGE card hard disk for a Cisco CRS-1
multichassis system. Note that this procedure only applies to previously unformatted hard disks and
cannot be used to alter the formatting of a hard disk.
Step 1
Enter the show media location command in ADMIN mode to verify that the hard disk has not been
formatted. If the hard disk is unformatted you should see output similar to the following example:
