Matchup Notes
Charleston Southern at Liberty – Jan. 26
 Davon Marshall led the Flames with 23 points. Tavares Speaks recorded double digits in
points for the 10th straight game, finishing with 15 points.
 Marshall's seven three-pointers were the most since Kyle Ohman knocked down seven
in a 103-88 victory over VMI in the 2008 Big South Championship quarterfinals (March 4,
2008). Marshall is now one of five players in school history tied for second in singlegame three-pointers made.
 Charleston Southern leading scorer Saah Nimley led the Buccaneers with 23 points,
hitting 6-of-12 three-pointers while grabbing 10 rebounds. Arlon Harper followed up with
19 points and eight boards. Muo Mathiang closed out the Bucs double digit scoring with
14 tallies, while Allie Fullah pulled down 10 rebounds.
 The Buccaneers shot 44.1 percent from the field, hitting 30-of-68 attempts. Liberty
finished the contest shooting 37.5 percent (24-of-64). Three-pointers themed the game,
with Liberty sinking 11 compared to 10 for the Bucs. Despite Charleston Southern
leading the conference in rebounding coming in to the contest, the Flames edged the
Buccaneers on the glass, 44-42.
Notes and Anecdotes
 If the tournament was structured using last year’s format, Charleston Southern would be
the overall No. 1 seed. Liberty would be the No. 10 seed.
 Charleston Southern eliminated Liberty last season in the 2012 Big South Championship
quarterfinals, defeating the Flames, 88-74 (Feb. 29, 2012).
 Liberty is holding its opponents to 61.0 ppg, while averaging 68.0 ppg in the 2013 Big
South Championship. The Flames are also averaging 36.0 rebounds per game, while
holding opponents to 31.7 rpg.
 The Flames are shooting 44.1 percent (64-of-145) from the field in the tournament, this
season, while holding opponents to 37.0 percent (61-of-165). Liberty is also 18-of-39

(15-of-61). At the foul line, the Flames are 58-of-69 (84.1 percent). Liberty’s opponents
are 46-of-67 (68.7 percent).
Liberty is on a four-game win streak, its longest of the season. Prior to the postseason,
Liberty had not strung together back-to-back victories against Division I opponents all
season long.
Liberty head coach Dale Layer is in his 20th season as a head coach and fourth year
with the Flames. He owns a 332-261 career record and a 62-67 ledger at Liberty.
Charleston Southern head coach Barclay Radebaugh is in his ninth year as a head
coach and eighth year at Charleston Southern. He has a 128-142 overall record and a
107-134 mark with the Buccaneers.
The coaching matchup features two former head coaches from Queens University in
Charlotte, N.C.
Prior to coaching at Charleston Southern, Barclay Radebaugh spent one season at
Queens University in Charlotte, leading the Royals to a 21-8 record (2003-04). Queens
is also where Dale Layer began his head coaching career in 1989. Layer spent nine
seasons at Queens, amassing a 167-87 record and reaching the NCAA Division II
Tournament on two occasions, including the Sweet 16 in 1996. Layer was inducted into
the Queens Hall of Fame in 2010.
Layer and Radebaugh are also previous Big South Coach of the Year Award winners.
Layer earned the honor during the 2010-11 season, followed by Radebaugh, last
season.
Although he was forced to take a medical redshirt this season, Flames and Buccaneers
fans have not forgot about Antwan Burrus. Last season, Burrus knocked down a 30-foot
buzzer beater against the Buccaneers, helping Liberty pick up a key 75-74 road win. The
lone three-point jumper of Burrus’ career landed at No. 2 on ESPN Sports Center’s Top
10 plays that night.
Big South Championship Notes
 Liberty holds a 20-19 (.513) record all-time in the Big South Championship, with four
finals appearances and two titles (1994, 2004).
 This year marks Liberty’s fifth Big South Championship finals appearance and first since
2004.
 The Flames are 2-2 all-time in the Big South Championship finals.
 Liberty is 2-4 all-time against Charleston Southern in the Championship.
 In both of Liberty’s championship runs, the Flames defeated Charleston Southern in the
quarterfinals before winning the entire tournament. Liberty defeated the Buccaneers in
the quarterfinals of the 1994 Big South Championship, 82-71, inside the Vines Center
(March 4, 1994). Nearly ten years later, the Flames hosted the Buccaneers again,
defeating Charleston Southern, 60-54, in the 2004 quarterfinals (March 2, 2004).
 Charleston Southern defeated Liberty in the semifinals of the 1995 Big South
Championship, 60-58 (March 4, 1995), before capturing its third conference title with a
68-67 win over UNC Greensboro the following day. Two years later, the Buccaneers
defeated Liberty in the finals, 64-54, earning its fourth conference crown (March 1,
1997).
 Liberty’s victory over Coastal Carolina marked its first-ever tournament win under head
coach Dale Layer.
A Look Back at Saturday’s Win over Gardner-Webb
 The Liberty men's basketball team ended a nine-year streak without a Big South
Championship finals appearance, defeating No. 2 South seed Gardner-Webb, 65-62, in
Saturday's semifinals matchup.
 John Caleb Sanders paced the Flames offense with 19 points, followed by Joel Vander
Pol (11) and Tavares Speaks (10). Vander Pol also collected seven boards to go with his
scoring effort off the bench.
 Tashan Newsome and Max Landis led the Runnin' Bulldogs (21-12) with 15 points,
apiece. Point guard Tyler Strange finished with 12 tallies followed by Kevin Hartley, who
closed out Gardner-Webb's scoring with 10 points.
 The Flames shot 46.8 percent (22-of-47) from the field, compared to 39.2 percent (20-of51) for the Runnin' Bulldogs. Dale Layer's squad outscored Gardner-Webb in the paint,
26-8. Gardner-Webb made up for the difference from the three-point arc, going 10-of-26
from downtown. Liberty finished the night shooting 62.5 percent from three-point land (5of-8).
A Look Back at Thursday’s Win over High Point
 Looking for its first win against the Panthers this year after being swept in the regular
season, the Flames led by 17 at halftime before the Panthers answered in the second
half.
 With Liberty up by one with 4.5 seconds remaining, High Point, who trailed the entire
game, had the final possession. However, the Panthers could not get the potential
game-winning shot off before the buzzer sounded, leading to a 61-60 Flames victory.
 Liberty's win marks its 12th trip to the tournament's semifinals and its first since 2009.
The Flames are now 12-9 all-time in the quarterfinals and 2-1 against the Panthers in
postseason play.
 Tavares Speaks led the Flames with 17 points, followed by Davon Marshall (16) and
John Caleb Sanders (12).
 Allan Chaney paced the Panthers with 17 points, while Dejuan McGaughy chipped in 13
markers.
 Liberty shot 44.4 percent (20-of-45) from the field, while holding High Point to 33.3
percent (19-of-57). Head coach Dale Layer's squad also won the rebounding battle, 3730.
A Look Back at Tuesday’s Win over Coastal Carolina
 Despite an early lead by No. 4 South seed Coastal Carolina, No. 5 North seed Liberty
capitalized on the Chanticleers' 11:36 second-half field goal drought, which included a
decisive 23-3 run, to defeat the host team, 78-61, Tuesday evening.
 The Flames' tournament victory was their first since defeating Gardner-Webb in the
quarterfinals of the 2009 Big South Championship, 88-77 (March 3, 2009). Liberty is now
4-0 all-time in postseason play against Coastal Carolina.
 Davon Marshall paced the Flames with a game-high 28 points, going 7-of-12 from the
field, including 5-of-7 from three-point land and 9-of-10 at the charity stripe. The junior's
five three-pointers allowed him to surpass Anthony Smith for third place all-time on
Liberty's single-season three-point field goal list. Marshall now has 89 three-pointers this
season.
 Marshall’s 28 points are the most by a Liberty player in the Big South Championship
since Seth Curry recorded 30 in the Flames’ 88-77 victory over Gardner-Webb in the
2009 quarterfinals.
 Tomasz Gielo added in 14 points against Coastal Carolina, while John Caleb Sanders
had 10 tallies.
 Anthony Raffa led the Chanticleers with 23 points, followed by Kierre Greenwood, who
had 19.
 Liberty shot 41.5 percent (22-of-53) from the field, including 45.0 percent (9-of-20) from
the three-point arc. Coastal Carolina finished the night with 38.6 percent shooting (22-of57). The Liberty defense held the Chanticleers to a season-low 6.3 percent (1-of-16)
from three-point range.
 Coastal Carolina's previous season low from downtown occurred on Jan. 12, when the
Flames held the Chanticleers to 2-of-20 (10.0 percent) during Liberty's 64-56 victory
inside the Vines Center.
