NiCN molecules were produced by the reaction of laser-ablated nickel atoms with cyanogen
under supersonic jet-cooled conditions. The isotopic species NiC15N was produced in a
similar way except that acetonitrile-15N was used instead of cyanogen. Laser-excited

fluorescence in the region 500…630 nm revealed seven electronic states, X1 2∆5/2, X 2 2∆3/2,

W1 2Π3/2, A 2∆5/2, B 2Π3/2, C 2Φ7/2 and D 2Φ5/2. Rotational constants and bond lengths
~
were determined for the X1 2∆5/2 ground state.
