Birds
of
Poosey
Conservation Area
T
he Poosey
Conservation
Area features
fern-draped stone walls,
heavily timbered hills of oak and
hickory, rolling grass expanses and a variety of habitats
and wildlife. There are fields of cool- and warm-season
grasses, and agricultural fields that support grain crops
and hay crops of alfalfa and grasses. The forested areas
provide a brilliant fall foliage show. There are two large
lakes, nine fishable ponds and more than 100 small
wildlife watering holes.
The Missouri Department of Conservation purchased
the original 814-acre tract in 1979 from Robert
Daugherty. Additional purchases have increased the size
to approximately 5,738 acres.
The settlers, who preferred forested tracts to open
prairies, were attracted by a plentiful supply of fuel,
food, water and building materials. This area was
settled in 1833 by people from Kentucky, Tennessee
and Virginia.
This area’s rugged landscape reminded some of the
settlers of the Poosey region in Kentucky, giving rise
to the area’s name. The area continues to be known
as the “Kingdom of Poosey,” and the travelers asking
directions to it are usually told that it’s “just ahead over
the next hill.”
Members of the Grand River Audubon Chapter have
compiled the list of bird species observed here.
