Liberty FLAMES
(4-12, 0-2 Big South)
Lynchburg, Va. - Vines Center - 6 p.m.
The Game
Liberty returns to action, Saturday, playing host to Coastal Carolina. The Flames are looking for their first Big South win of the season, as they welcome the Chanticleers, who
are 2-0 in conference play. Liberty holds the lead in the all-time series, 26-23, but the
Chanticleers have erased the deficit in recent years, winning five of the last six meetings.
The 50th meeting between the two squads tips off at 6 p.m., and will air live on the Liberty
Channel, ESPN3 and MASN.
What to Watch for
- While the Chanticleers roster features a number of freshmen, the team still possesses
quality senior leadership. Anthony Raffa and Kierre Greenwood are pacing Coastal Carolina’s offense, this season, averaging 18.9 and 13.2 ppg, respectively. Entering Saturday’s
matchup, the senior duo accounts for nearly 46.0 percent of the Chanticleers’ scoring. A
big key to the game for Liberty will involve containing these two consistent scorers.
- Whether he’s come off the bench or received the starting nod, Tavares Speaks has been
Mr. Consistency for Liberty. The senior has posted double scoring figures in each of the
last five games, averaging 13.6 ppg. Look for Speaks to continue this trend, regardless of
when he takes the court.

- Although Davon Marshall remains Liberty’s scoring leader, this season, he’s been receiving some more help recently from John Caleb Sanders. The Sugar Land, Texas native is
leading the Flames in scoring during the last five games, averaging 14.6 ppg. Averaging
16.5 ppg through the first two conference contests, Sanders hopes to continue to trend
upward.
- In last year’s win over Coastal Carolina, Joel Vander Pol put on a show inside the Vines
Center, giving the Flames 13 points and six rebounds off the bench. Since returning to
the lineup, this season, Vander Pol has provided a boost to the Flames in rebounding and
blocking. With Vander Pol averaging 20 minutes in the last two contests, the 6-10 center
could be a significant factor inside, once again.

Notes and Anecdotes
- Prior to becoming the head coach at Coastal Carolina, Cliff Ellis coached opposite of
Liberty three times in his previous two coaching stints, going 3-0 in the trio of matchups.
During his tenure at Clemson, the Tigers squared off with the Flames on two occasions. In
the first meeting, Clemson defeated Liberty 96-71 (Feb. 11, 1989). The Tigers then bested
Liberty during the Flames 1992-93 season opener (Dec. 2, 2992), 93-68. During his time
at Auburn, Ellis and the Tigers hosted the Flames on Dec. 8, 1995, picking up a narrow
63-58 victory.
- Liberty’s win over Coastal Carolina last season snapped a five-game losing skid versus
the Chanticleers. Prior to the win, Liberty’s last victory over Coastal Carolina took place on
Feb. 16, 2009, as the Flames took the contest, 85-82, in Conway, S.C.
- Saturday’s matchup marks the only time Liberty and Coastal Carolina will square off
during the regular season. However, the Flames will still have the opportunity of playing
inside the Chanticleers new arena, The HTC Center. The facility will serve as the site of
the 2013 VisitMyrtleBeach.com Big South Basketball Championships for both men’s and
women’s basketball, March 5-10.
- Tavares Speaks is the only returning player to average double scoring figures against
the Chanticleers, last season, averaging 13.5 ppg. Anthony Raffa and Kierre Greenwood
averaged 16.0 and 13.5 ppg, respectively, against the Flames.

Notes from Liberty’s Game Versus VMI
With the defeat, Liberty falls to 4-12 on the year and 0-2 in conference play. VMI improves
to 7-7 on the year and 2-0 in Big South action. The Keydets’ win knots the all-time series
at 14-14. VMI is now 9-5 all-time inside Cameron Hall when hosting the Flames.
Davon Marshall led Liberty with 15 points, followed by John Caleb Sanders (14), Tavares
Speaks (13) and Tomasz Gielo (12). Gielo’s point total marks a career-high.
Big South leading scorer Stan Okoye paced VMI with a game-high 20 points and 10 rebounds. D.J. Covington concluded the night with 18 tallies for the Keydets.
Liberty shot 45.2 percent from the field (28-of-62), while the Keydets finished the night
shooting 46.2 percent (30-of-65). The Flames won the battle in the paint, 32-28, but VMI
outscored Liberty from the three-point line, 36-18.
Burrus to Apply for Medical Redshirt
Liberty Head Men’s Basketball Coach Dale Layer has announced that senior forward Antwan Burrus will apply for a medical redshirt for the 2012-13 season. Burrus has
missed all 14 games this season due to a stress reaction in his left foot.
Last season, Burrus concluded the year fourth on the team in scoring, averaging 11.2
points per game. Along with his point total, Burrus also led the team in blocked shots with
36 and was second in rebounding, grabbing 6.3 boards per game.
Upon his return to the Flames lineup next season, Burrus needs 234 points to become a member of Liberty’s 1,000-point club. The Winterville, N.C., native is also fourth
all-time in program history with 104 career blocked shots, needing nine more to grab the
No. 2 spot.
Fast Break
- Since returning to the Flames lineup, this season, Joel Vander Pol has garnered a career
highs in rebounds (11 vs. Union College) and blocks (4 vs. Western Carolina).
- Against Western Carolina (Dec. 31) Liberty won 63-62 despite committing a season-high
24 turnovers. The Flames’ miscues were the most in exactly two years. Liberty committed
25 turnovers in a 64-62 overtime win at Gardner-Webb, on Dec. 31, 2010.
- In Liberty’s game against Milligan, John Caleb Sanders surpassed the 600-point mark
for his Liberty career, posting a career-high 24 tallies.
- Liberty leads the Big South in three-point field goal percentage (37.6) and in three-point
field goal percentage defense (29.2).

Coach’s Comments
“Davon is very experienced and plays two different positions. He played on the third-best
junior college team at the point and shooting guard positions. He was their leading scorer
and is a big game guy. He’s got a great spirit about him. He is a guy that brings toughness,
leadership and the ability to score the ball in many ways.”

Coach’s Comments
“Larry is a team guy, who had a stellar high school career. He is a pure point guard, who
understands the game. He can score the ball and pass it. I like his feel for how he plays
and how he fits our offense.”

Coach’s Comments
“JR is a terrific rebounder who brings a lot of toughness. He is a guy who is very competitive and will work, dive on the floor, he will take charges and be around the ball all the time.
He can score with opportunity and is a guy that could really be a force for us.”
