The Game
Continuing Big South play on Wednesday, Liberty heads to nearby Lexington, Va., to take
on the No.5 scoring offense in the country in VMI. The Keydets are looking to knot the alltime series between the Flames, as Liberty holds a slight 14-13 edge. On the other hand,
the Flames are looking to snap a teo-game skid against the Keydets inside Cameron Hall.
Tipoff is slated for 7 p.m., with the game airing LIVE on the Liberty Channel.
What to Watch for
- Two words – Stan Okoye. The Big South Conference’s points leader is also among the
nation’s top scorer’s at No. 14. The VMI senior and Big South Preseason Player of the
Year is coming off a career-high 39 points in the Keydets’ 86-77 victory at Presbyterian
College, Saturday. Can the Flames’ defense prevent the offensively minded Okoye from
making them his second act?
- If anyone on the Flames’ roster understands what Big South Conference play is all
about, it is John Caleb Sanders. The junior guard proved that on Saturday, leading the
team with 19 points. While Sanders struggled in the early part of the season, he is turning
things up a notch at just the right time. Look for Sanders to lead the Flames by example
with his scoring ability.
- Liberty struggled on the inside against UNC Asheville and cannot afford to do so when
stepping for into Cameron Hall. Waiting for the Flames in the post will be 6-9 forward D.J.
Covington. The Virginia Beach, Va. native enters Wednesday’s matchup averaging 13.6
points, 6.4 rebounds and 2.7 blocks per game.
- Wednesday’s game could turn into a three-point shooting contest rather quickly. Liberty
leads the league in three-point field goal percentage (37.6), but the Keydets average 9.1
three-pointers per game compared to 7.5 for the Flames. Dale Layer’s squad is also tops
in the conference in three-point field goal percentage defense. Who is No. 2? That would
be the Keydets.

- Wednesday’s matchup marks the second time this season the Flames have encountered one of the top individual scorers in the country. On Dec. 18, Liberty squared off with
Iona and the Gaels’ scoring leader Lamont Jones, who is currently fifth in the country,
averaging 22.2 points per game. Jones concluded the night with 24 points in the Gaels
87-69 victory.
- Since returning to the Flames lineup, Joel Vander Pol has given Liberty a boost inside.
In the first nine games without Vander Pol, the Flames averaged 30.4 rebounds per game
and had a rebounding margin of - 6.0. In the six games with the 6-10 center, the Flames
are averaging 41.2 rebounds with a margin of + 5.8. Liberty also has more blocks (22) with
Vander Pol in the lineup than in games without (21).
- While VMI is No.1 in the conference in scoring offense (83.5 ppg), the Keydets are also
No. 11 in scoring defense (79. 0 ppg). The Flames are 10th in scoring offense (63.7 ppg)
and sixth in scoring defense (68.8 ppg).
- Before transitioning to Division I basketball, Liberty’s John Caleb Sanders and VMI’s Joe

Notes from Liberty’s Game Versus UNC Asheville
- The Flames came out the Vines Center tunnel firing on all cylinders to take a one-point
lead into halftime. However, the Bulldogs benefited from a career-high 27-point effort from
Keith Hornsby to win, 83-69.
- With the loss, Liberty falls to 4-11 on the year and 0-1 in conference action. Asheville
improves to 7-8, this season, and 1-0 in the Big South. The Bulldogs are now 30-20 alltime against the Flames, including 11-12 in the Vines Center.
- John Caleb Sanders paced the Flames’ offense with 19 points, followed Tavares Speaks
(15) and Davon Marshall (12).
- Along with Hornsby’s performance, Asheville received double-digit scoring figures from
Will Weeks (15), Jeremy Atkinson (12) and D.J. Cunningham (10). Cunningham also finished the night with 10 rebounds and four blocks.
- Asheville shot 52.6 percent (30-of-57) from the field, while holding the Flames to 39.7
percent (25-of-63). Liberty’s field goal percentage on the night snapped a four-game
streak of shooting 40.0 percent or better.
- The Flames outscored Bulldogs from three-point arc, 21-9, but Asheville controlled the
paint, 38-20. The visitors also capitalized with 14 points off turnovers compared to the
Flames four tallies.
Burrus to Apply for Medical Redshirt
Liberty Head Men’s Basketball Coach Dale Layer has announced that senior forward Antwan Burrus will apply for a medical redshirt for the 2012-13 season. Burrus has
missed all 14 games this season due to a stress reaction in his left foot.
Last season, Burrus concluded the year fourth on the team in scoring, averaging 11.2
points per game. Along with his point total, Burrus also led the team in blocked shots with
36 and was second in rebounding, grabbing 6.3 boards per game.
Upon his return to the Flames lineup next season, Burrus needs 234 points to become a member of Liberty’s 1,000-point club. The Winterville, N.C., native is also fourth
all-time in program history with 104 career blocked shots, needing nine more to grab the
No. 2 spot.
Fast Break
- Since returning to the Flames lineup, this season, Joel Vander Pol has garnered a career
highs in rebounds (11 vs. Union College) and blocks (4 vs. Western Carolina).
- Against Western Carolina (Dec. 31) Liberty won 63-62 despite committing a season-high
24 turnovers. The Flames’ miscues were the most in exactly two years. Liberty committed
25 turnovers in a 64-62 overtime win at Gardner-Webb, on Dec. 31, 2010.
- In Liberty’s game against Milligan, John Caleb Sanders surpassed the 600-point mark
for his Liberty career, posting a career-high 24 tallies.
- Liberty leads the Big South in three-point field goal percentage (37.6) and in three-point
field goal percentage defense (28.1).
- JR Coronado is third among Big South players in rebounding, grabbing 8.6 boards per
game.
- Davon Marshall is second in the conference in three-pointers per game, averaging nearly three per contest.
- Liberty defeated Southern Virginia on Dec. 4 to end an eight-game losing skid. Prior to
the victory, the Flames had started the season 0-8 for the first time in school history.
- Liberty was also 0-3 inside the Vines Center for the first time in the facility’s history. Before the win, the Flames had not started 0-3 at home since the 1988-89 season, its first
year in Division I.

2011-12 Highlights
- After starting Big South Conference play 0-6, the Flames turned things around winning
nine of their last 12 conference contests to earn a first round bye in the 2012 Big South
Championship.
- For the second straight year, Jesse Sanders was named Big South All-Conference first
team. The senior finished third in the country in assists, averaging 8.0 per game. Sanders concluded his four-year career as a Flame with 1,235 points (15th in Liberty history),
815 rebounds (5th) and 727 assists (1st).
- With time winding down in Liberty’s game at Charleston Southern (Feb. 9, 2012), Antwan Burrus hit a buzzer-beating three-pointer from 30 feet, helping the Flames cement a
75-74 victory. The long range basket was featured at No. 2 on ESPN SportsCenter’s Top
10 Plays that night.
