Liberty FLAMES
(4-10)
Lynchburg, Va. - Vines Center - 6 p.m.
The Game
Stepping into Big South Conference play for the first time this season, the Liberty
men’s basketball team faces a stiff test, Saturday, squaring off with two-time defending
champion UNC Asheville. The Bulldogs lead the all-time series against the Flames 29-20
after sweeping Liberty, last season. This year, the two squads will meet just once during
the regular season due to the new 12-team conference structure.
Saturday’s contest will be televised LIVE on the Liberty Channel, MASN, ESPN3,
Comcast Sports South and Charter SportSoutheast (Asheville area). Mike Tilley will be
the play-by-play announcer, with Tim Scarborough handling color analysis. A live radio
broadcast will also be available on LibertyFlames.com (Flagship WRVL 88.3), with Alan
York calling play-by-play.
The contest is the second part of a doubleheader, which opens with a matchup between the Liberty Lady Flames and UNC Asheville at 3 p.m. Flames fans can purchase a
ticket for five dollars as a part of Liberty’s TRBC night.
What to Watch for
- Joel Vander Pol continues to show progression since his return to the court. After garnering a double-double against Union College on Dec. 28, which included a career-high 11
rebounds, the 6-10 center followed up with a career-high four blocks at Western Carolina,
this past Monday. Last year’s conference opener at Campbell turned into a career-high
night for Vander Pol (20 points). Look for the redshirt junior to continue to provide an extra
presence inside as the Flames step into conference play.
- Last season, John Caleb Sanders was Liberty’s leading scorer in games against Asheville (16.5 ppg). In the Flames’ last four games, the Sugar Land, Texas native has paced
the Liberty offense, averaging 14.0 ppg. However, since his career-high 24-point performance against Milligan on Dec. 21, the junior guard has averaged just 8.0 points. Can
Sanders turn things around in Liberty’s conference opener against the two-time defending
conference champion?
- Big South Conference openers have not been kind to Liberty over the years, as the
Flames are 6-15 all-time. However, a win over the Bulldogs would give the Flames victories in three of their last four conference openers.

Notes from Liberty’s Game Versus Western Carolina
- With the Flames trailing by one with five seconds on the clock, the Catamounts called a
timeout with none left, leading to a technical foul on the home team. The infraction sent
Tavares Speaks to the foul line, where he connected on both free throws. Liberty stopped
Western Carolina on the next possession to earn their first victory over a Division I opponent, this season.
- Liberty moved to 4-10 on the year despite committing a season-high 24 turnovers. The
Flames’ miscues were the most in exactly two years. Liberty committed 25 turnovers in a
64-62 overtime win at Gardner-Webb, on Dec. 31, 2010.
- Speaks led Liberty with 13 points. Tomasz Gielo and Flames’ leading scorer Davon
Marshall chipped in 10 tallies, apiece. Gielo also garnered Liberty’s fourth double-double
of the season, grabbing a career-high 11 rebounds.
- John Caleb Sanders and Joel Vander Pol each recorded nine points. Vander Pol also
swatted a career-high four blocks, the most by a Flame, this season.
- The Flames shot 44.4 percent (20-of-45) from the field, while holding Western Carolina
to 37.1 percent (23-of-62). The Catamounts outscored the Flames 32-13 off turnovers.
Liberty finished the night with its best free throw percentage of the season, hitting 18-of22 (81.8) shots from the foul line.
Burrus to Apply for Medical Redshirt
Liberty Head Men’s Basketball Coach Dale Layer has announced that senior forward Antwan Burrus will apply for a medical redshirt for the 2012-13 season. Burrus has
missed all 14 games this season due to a stress reaction in his left foot.
Last season, Burrus concluded the year fourth on the team in scoring, averaging 11.2
points per game. Along with his point total, Burrus also led the team in blocked shots with
36 and was second in rebounding, grabbing 6.3 boards per game.
Upon his return to the Flames lineup next season, Burrus needs 234 points to become a member of Liberty’s 1,000-point club. The Winterville, N.C., native is also fourth
all-time in program history with 104 career blocked shots, needing nine more to grab the
No. 2 spot.
Fast Break
- In Liberty’s game against Milligan, John Caleb Sanders surpassed the 600-point mark
for his Liberty career, posting a career-high 24 tallies.
- Liberty leads the Big South in three-point field goal percentage (37.6) and in three-point
field goal percentage defense (27.9).
- JR Coronado is third among Big South players in rebounding, grabbing 8.9 boards per
game.
- Davon Marshall is first in the conference in three-pointers per game, averaging nearly
three per contest.
- Liberty defeated Southern Virginia on Dec. 4 to end an eight-game losing skid. Prior to
the victory, the Flames had started the season 0-8 for the first time in school history.
- Liberty was also 0-3 inside the Vines Center for the first time in the facility’s history. Before the win, the Flames had not started 0-3 at home since the 1988-89 season, its first
year in Division I.
- While the Flames are shooting well from the perimeter, the paint has not been as kind.
Liberty is currently being outscored in the paint by opponents, 426-319.
- Sophomore walk-on and backup point guard Kelly Assinesi has left the team. In 12
games, Assinesi averaged 0.9 points, 0.4 rebounds and 1.3 assists.

- Against Georgia State, Davon Marshall led all scorers with a game-high 25 points, marking the first 20-point game by a Flame this season and the most tallies since a 26-point
effort by Evan Gordon at Coastal Carolina on Feb 3, 2011.
- Marshall’s six three-pointers were also the most since Gordon posted the same number
in Liberty’s 2010-11 season opener against Virginia Intermont (Nov. 12, 2010).
- Despite the defeat against the Panthers, Liberty finished the contest with 12 three-pointers, the most since knocking down 15 in a 95-80 victory at Charleston Southern during the
2008-09 season (Feb. 14, 2009).

Coach’s Comments
“Davon is very experienced and plays two different positions. He played on the third-best
junior college team at the point and shooting guard positions. He was their leading scorer
and is a big game guy. He’s got a great spirit about him. He is a guy that brings toughness,
leadership and the ability to score the ball in many ways.”

Coach’s Comments
“Chad played on the second-best junior college team in the country, Northwest Florida
State,” Layer mentioned. “He is a terrific outside shooter and tough competitor. He has
been in big games and brings experience, toughness and outside shooting. I think he addresses a lot of our weaknesses going into the season.”

Coach’s Comments
“Larry is a team guy, who had a stellar high school career. He is a pure point guard, who
understands the game. He can score the ball and pass it. I like his feel for how he plays
and how he fits our offense.”

Coach’s Comments
“JR is a terrific rebounder who brings a lot of toughness. He is a guy who is very competitive and will work, dive on the floor, he will take charges and be around the ball all the time.
He can score with opportunity and is a guy that could really be a force for us.”
