The Game
Fresh off its highest scoring game of the season, the Liberty men’s basketball team
returns to action on Monday against Southern Conference member Western Carolina.
The matchup marks the third meeting all-time between the two squads, with the series
currently knotted at 1-1. Liberty looks to take the lead in the series while playing on New
Year’s Eve for the third straight season. Tipoff inside the Liston B. Ramsey Center is
slated for 2 p.m.
What to Watch For
- After the announcement that Antwan Burrus would apply for a medical redshirt, Liberty’s
big men stepped up in a big way on Friday. JR Coronado, Andrew Smith and Joel Vander
Pol each had career nights in Liberty’s first 100-point game in nearly two years. Look for
the Flames’ post players to continue to become more comfortable as they take on more
responsibility inside.
- With just one game left before conference play begins, Davon Marshall is settling in at
the point guard position. This past Friday, Marshall finished with 14 points while adding a
season-high nine assists.
- Since seeing a 25-game starting streak snapped, Tavares Speaks has come off the
bench in the last three games. The senior guard has averaged 12.0 ppg during the span.
- On paper, the Flames and the Catamounts are similar in a number of statistical categories. In particular, both teams average over seven three-pointers per game, while holding
opponents to under 29 percent from three-point land.
- A key to the Flames’ success will be trying to contain redshirt junior Trey Sumler. The
Rocky Mount, N.C., native leads the Catamounts in points (16.3 ppg), assists (3.9 apg)
and steals (1.8 spg). Along with being a key distributor for the Catamounts, Sumler is highly efficient from the three-point arc (42.0 percent) and the free throw line (79.6 percent).

- Monday’s matchup marks the third straight year the Flames have played on New Year’s
Eve. Liberty is currently 2-2 all-time on the last day of the year. The Flames first-ever
meeting on New Year’s Eve occurred on Dec. 31, 1983. On that day, Liberty defeated
Roberts Wesleyan, 106-63.
- The Catamounts opened the season against two-time defending Big South champion
UNC Asheville, falling to the Bulldogs at Kimmel Arena, 71-61 (Nov. 9). Liberty hosts
Asheville on Saturday at 6 p.m.
- The Flames and Catamounts share two common opponent entering Monday’s meeting.
Western Carolina defeated Howard on Nov. 21, 69-67, in Cancun, Mexico. Liberty fell to
the Bison in Washington, D.C., 60-53 (Dec. 15). Both squads also squared off with nationally ranked Georgetown. Liberty lost to the Hoyas, 68-59 (Nov. 14), while the Catamounts

- The Flames finished the night shooting 53.8 percent from the floor, its second-highest
percentage of the season. Liberty had its best night of the season from the charity stripe,
hitting 25-of-32 foul shots (78.1 percent). The Flames also posted season highs in steals
(12), bench points (54) and points in the paint (48). Union College ended the evening
shooting 39.7 percent (23-of-58).
Burrus to Apply for Medical Redshirt
Liberty Head Men’s Basketball Coach Dale Layer has announced that senior forward Antwan Burrus will apply for a medical redshirt for the 2012-13 season. Burrus has
missed all 12 games this season due to a stress reaction in his left foot.
Last season, Burrus concluded the year fourth on the team in scoring, averaging 11.2
points per game. Along with his point total, Burrus also led the team in blocked shots with
36 and was second in rebounding, grabbing 6.3 boards per game.
Upon his return to the Flames lineup next season, Burrus needs 234 points to become a member of Liberty’s 1,000-point club. The Winterville, N.C., native is also fourth
all-time in program history with 104 career blocked shots, needing nine more to grab the
No. 2 spot.
Fast Break
- In Liberty’s game against Milligan, John Caleb Sanders surpassed the 600-point mark
for his Liberty career, posting a career-high 24 tallies.
- Liberty leads the Big South in three-point field goal percentage (37.7) and is second in
three-point field goal defense (28.9).
- JR Coronado is third among Big South players in rebounding, grabbing 9.1 boards per
game.
- Davon Marshall is first in the conference in three-pointers per game, averaging nearly
three per contest.
- Liberty defeated Southern Virginia on Dec. 4 to end an eight-game losing skid. Prior to
the victory, the Flames had started the season 0-8 for the first time in school history.
- Liberty was also 0-3 inside the Vines Center for the first time in the facility’s history. Before the win, the Flames had not started 0-3 at home since the 1988-89 season, its first
year in Division I.
- While the Flames are shooting well from the perimeter, the paint has not been as kind.
Liberty is currently being outscored in the paint by opponents, 400-291.
- Sophomore walk-on and backup point guard Kelly Assinesi has left the team. In 12
games, Assinesi averaged 0.9 points, 0.4 rebounds and 1.3 assists.

2011-12 Highlights
- After starting Big South Conference play 0-6, the Flames turned things around winning
nine of their last 12 conference contests to earn a first round bye in the 2012 Big South
Championship.
- For the second straight year, Jesse Sanders was named Big South All-Conference first
team. The senior finished third in the country in assists, averaging 8.0 per game. Sanders concluded his four-year career as a Flame with 1,235 points (15th in Liberty history),
815 rebounds (5th) and 727 assists (1st).
- With time winding down in Liberty’s game at Charleston Southern (Feb. 9, 2012), Antwan Burrus hit a buzzer-beating three-pointer from 30 feet, helping the Flames cement a
75-74 victory. The long range basket was featured at No. 2 on ESPN SportsCenter’s Top
10 Plays that night.
