scoring list.

- Known for their perimeter defense, this season, the Flames will look to shut down Milligan’s three-point shooters after allowing an uncharacteristic 18 treys at Iona. Liberty still
remains tops among Big South squads in three-point field goal defense, forcing opponents to shoot 28.6 percent from long range.
- Both teams are coming off trips to the great state of New York. Milligan squared off with
King’s College in New York City on Wednesday, while the Flames faced Iona in New Rochelle, N.Y, this past Tuesday. The first few minutes of the game should give an indication
as to what effect the extensive travel will have on the two squads.

of the Appalachian Athletic Conference (AAC). The Flames are 9-6 against Bluefield, 2-2
against Bryan, 7-0 against Montreat, 1-0 against Union College and 3-0 against Virginia
Intermont.
- Liberty-Milligan Connection: Liberty graduate assistant Bryant Edwards was a threeyear letterwinner in basketball at Milligan. Last season, Edwards appeared in 26 contests,
receiving the starting nod five times. Edwards averaged 3.0 points, 1.4 rebounds and 1.9
assists per game for the Buffs.
- The Flames will face another AAC member next Friday, as they square off with Union
College. The contest marks the second meeting all-time against the Bulldogs. Game time
is slated for 7 p.m.
- Prior to coming to Milligan, head coach Bill Robinson spent 12 seasons as the head
coach at Montreat. During the span, Montreat matched up with the Flames on two occasions. Robinson’s Cavaliers were defeated by the Flames inside the Vines Center on Dec.
9, 2000, 80-62. Liberty then opened the 2008-09 season against Montreat on Nov. 14,
2008, picking up the 97-77 victory.

Notes from Liberty’s Game Versus Iona
- Despite the Flames entering the night 11th in the nation in three-point field goal defense,
the Gaels had the hot hand from beyond the arc, tying an Iona school record with 18
three-pointers to claim an 87-69 victory.
- The Gaels’ 18 treys were the most allowed by the Flames this season. Liberty fell to
1-10 on the year, while Iona improved to 5-4 on the season and 3-0 all-time against the
Flames.
- Iona’s top two scorers proved why they are pacing the Gaels’ offense. Leading scorer
Lamont Jones posted a game-high 24 points, while Sean Armand added 23 tallies.
- John Caleb Sanders led Liberty with a season-high 16 points. JR Coronado also had a
solid night, finishing with a season-high 11 points and 14 rebounds. Coronado’s doubledouble is the first for the Flames, this season.
- Playing in New Rochelle for the first time since his days at Monroe College, Davon Marshall concluded the night with nine points. Tavares Speaks also chipped in nine tallies for
the Flames.
Fast Break
- Tavares Speaks did not receive the starting nod at Iona, snapping a 25-game streak dating back to last season. Prior to Tuesday, the last time Speaks came off for the bench for
the Flames was during Liberty’s contest at UNC Asheville on Jan. 7, 2012.
- Liberty starts the season 1-10 for the fourth time in program history. The last time the
Flames started a season with a 1-10 record was during the 1998-99 campaign. Liberty
finished that year with a 4-23 record.
- Liberty leads the Big South in three-point field goal percentage (37.1) and three-point
field goal defense (28.6).
- JR Coronado is third among Big South players in rebounding, grabbing 8.5 boards per
game.
- Davon Marshall is first in the conference in three-pointers per game, averaging nearly
three per contest.
- While the Flames are shooting well from the perimeter, the paint has not been as kind.
Liberty is currently being outscored in the paint by opponents, 342-203.
- After posting a season-high 25 points against Georgia State, leading scorer Davon Marshall went scoreless against Southern Virginia, but had a season-high eight assists.
- Against Georgia State, Davon Marshall led all scorers with a game-high 25 points, marking the first 20-point game by a Flame this season and the most tallies since a 26-point
effort by Evan Gordon at Coastal Carolina on Feb 3, 2011.
- Marshall’s six three-pointers are also the most since Gordon posted the same number in
Liberty’s 2010-11 season opener against Virginia Intermont (Nov. 12, 2010).
- Despite the defeat against the Panthers, Liberty finished the contest with 12 three-pointers, the most since knocking down 15 in a 95-80 victory at Charleston Southern during
the 2008-09 season (Feb. 14, 2009).
- Liberty defeated Southern Virginia on Dec. 4 to end an eight-game losing skid. Prior to
the victory, the Flames had started the season 0-8 for the first time in school history.
- Liberty was also 0-3 inside the Vines Center for the first time in the facility’s history. Before the win, the Flames had not started 0-3 at home since the 1988-89 season, its first
year in Division I.
- Antwan Burrus is on pace this year to become Liberty’s 23rd member of its 1,000-point
club, needing 234 tallies to accomplish the feat.

Coach’s Comments
“Davon is very experienced and plays two different positions. He played on the third-best
junior college team at the point and shooting guard positions. He was their leading scorer
and is a big game guy. He’s got a great spirit about him. He is a guy that brings toughness,
leadership and the ability to score the ball in many ways.”

Coach’s Comments
“Chad played on the second-best junior college team in the country, Northwest Florida

been in big games and brings experience, toughness and outside shooting. I think he addresses a lot of our weaknesses going into the season.”

Coach’s Comments
“Larry is a team guy, who had a stellar high school career. He is a pure point guard, who
understands the game. He can score the ball and pass it. I like his feel for how he plays
and how he fits our offense.”

Coach’s Comments
“JR is a terrific rebounder who brings a lot of toughness. He is a guy who is very competitive and will work, dive on the floor, he will take charges and be around the ball all the time.
He can score with opportunity and is a guy that could really be a force for us.”
