Introduction During November 2011 the Library conducted an online survey inviting responses from students and all University staff. The purpose of this consultation was to measure current use and levels of satisfaction with the Library and to identify priorities for the future. As the Library has just undergone a £7.4 million refurbishment, we were also keen to assess and evaluate the use of the new spaces, services and facilities. The survey was made available online via the University and Library websites and all staff and students were sent an email inviting them to participate in the survey. A number of the questions were included in order to offer comparative data with previous surveys run in 2007 for academic staff and for students. A total of 1875 respondents completed the survey, representing 16% of the University community. University of Sussex Library Survey December 2011 3 2. Summary of main findings 1. Demographic information 1.1 Division of respondents Undergraduate: Postgraduate (taught): Postgraduate (research): Academic staff: Professional services staff: Other: 1.2 Full-time or part-time 56% 18% 12% 6% 7% 1% (1058) (343) (217) (114) (122) (21) 95% of the taught course students (UG and PGT) who responded were studying fulltime, with 35% of undergraduate students in their first year, 31% in their second, 26% in their third and 8% in their fourth or fifth year. 1.3 Academic School representation All academic departments were represented. As a proportion of faculty and students in the Schools, English, HAAP and Global Studies were marginally over represented whereas Engineering and Informatics, MPS and MFM were under-represented but not significantly. 2. Use of the Library 2.1 Visiting patterns 71% of all respondents (staff and students) said they visit the Library at least once a week. Of these, 37% said they use the Library most days. In the 2007 survey, 80% of students who responded to the survey indicated that they visited the Library on a regular basis – at least once a week. In 2011 the figure for students (including UG, PGT and PGR) visiting on a regular basis is 77%. 2.2 Activity and behaviour The most common activity on visiting the Library was to borrow or return books (1220), followed by individual study (1011) and using a computer (743). Not unexpectedly the 2007 survey identified the same behaviour. However the data from 2011 indicates a significant increase in the use of computers for work-related activity in the Library and for working in groups. University of Sussex Library Survey December 2011 4 3. Finding out about Library services 3.1 Methods of communication The most popular method for delivering user information is the News Feeds via the Library website (1057), followed by the plasma screens (965) and then Facebook (431), with printed Newsletters being the least popular (199). 328 respondents selected “other” in response to this question and of those, 254 said that email was their preferred form of communication. 4. Use of Library space 4.1 Use of study space The most popular (used at least once a week) spaces for studying in the Library are: • silent study areas (763) • computer clusters (696) • non silent individual study spaces (663) • social areas (415) 4.2 Preference for study space The five most important factors when choosing where to study in the Library are: • comfortable temperature (1135) • desk space (1110) • low level noise allowed (987) • silence (839) • access to a power socket (796) 5. Satisfaction with current provision 5.1 Service 91% of respondents either agreed or tended to agree that the Library provides a good service overall. This rises to 93% when the data is filtered for undergraduates alone, 87% for academic staff, 86% for postgraduate researchers and 89% for taught postgraduates. This compares very favourably with the 2007 survey response for this question of 77% for students. 5.2 Range of books 83% of respondents either agreed or tended to agree that the Library provides a good range of books. This compares very well with the 2007survey for students only, the data for which indicated a 58% satisfaction with the range of books provided by the Library University of Sussex Library Survey December 2011 5 5.3 Range of online resources 85% of respondents either agreed or tended to agree that the Library provides a good range of online resources. In 2007 the satisfaction rate was 62% among students. 5.4 Ease of use of the website 73% of respondents either agreed or tended to agree that the information on the Library website is easy to find, compared with a 2007 satisfaction rate for students of 66% 5.5 Selection of study areas 71% of respondents either agreed or tended to agree that the Library has a good selection of study areas; this rises to 78% if only UG responses are taken into account. In the 2007 student survey the satisfaction rate for study areas was 71%. 5.6 Library staff Only 4% of respondents indicated a level of dissatisfaction with the helpfulness of Library staff. The 2007 survey recorded a 21% dissatisfaction rate with the helpfulness of Library staff by students 5.7 Computers and printing 41% were either satisfied or fairly satisfied with the provision of computers in the Library. 40% of respondents were satisfied with the printing in the Library. 5.8 Environment (lighting, temperature etc.) 66% were either satisfied or fairly satisfied with the environment offered by the Library. Note: The Survey ran whilst we were experiencing problems with temperature control in the Library and the building was far hotter than usual. 5.9 Fines 67 % of respondents agree that the Library fines are set at the right level, 31% feel they are too high and 3% feel they are too low. 6. Online provision 6.1 Use of online materials 66% of the total respondents access the Library’s online resources at least once a week. 65% of UG and PGT students access online materials at least once a week and 79% of researchers (academics and PGR) access them at least once a week 6.2 Usefulness of the Library catalogue 82% of all respondents were either very or fairly successful last time they used the Library catalogue University of Sussex Library Survey December 2011 6 6.3 Reading lists and online reading lists 66% of taught course students were either successful or fairly successful in finding material using a reading list. The survey also indicated that respondents found the online reading lists useful for locating books (493), accessing electronic journal articles (510) and accessing digitized book chapters (221). Of those who have online reading lists, 88% responded that they found them useful. 6.4 Use of Electronic Library for research 67% of all respondents were either very successful or fairly successful when they last used the Electronic Library for research. University of Sussex Library Survey December 2011 7 7. Opening hours 7.1 Preference for increased open hours The data indicates a preference amongst researchers for weekday opening in vacation and amongst students for Sunday mornings in term-time. Undergraduate & postgraduate (taught) Postgraduate (research) & academic staff Sunday mornings in term 34% Saturday mornings in vacation Saturday afternoons in vacation 34% 21% 7% University of Sussex Library Survey December 2011 1% Sunday mornings in vacation 3% Weekday evenings in vacation I am satisfied with the Library's opening hours 6% 47% Sunday mornings in term 5% 12% 29% Saturday mornings in vacation 1% Saturday afternoons in vacation Sunday mornings in vacation Weekday evenings in vacation I am satisfied with the Library's opening hours 8 8. Food and drink and mobile phones To what extent do you agree with Library policy that phones must be kept on silent and calls only permitted in the closed stair-wells? 93% of respondents either strongly agreed or tended to agree with this policy Library policy is to permit bottled water in the Library but no other food or drink. This is to help maintain the study environment and keep the Library clean. To what extent do you agree with this policy? 63% of respondents either strongly agreed or tended to agree with this policy 9. Plans for improvement 9.1 Behaviour We have become acutely aware that a small number of students are behaving in a way that prevents conducive study for others and breaches Library rules; this includes eating and drinking (other than bottled water), use of mobile technologies and talking louder than appropriate in a library environment. To enable us to address and resolve these issues, we have established a student/Library working group to agree an acceptable code of conduct and investigate means of ensuring that all users act in a way that considers the needs of others. We will improve signage so that users know where they must remain silent and where they may talk quietly and Library staff will continue to make regular patrols to ensure compliance with Library regulations. 9.2 Course material As part of the University Periodic Review of all programmes and courses, we are working closely with all Schools to ensure the Library is better informed about the resources needed to support teaching. We are also committed to developing effective mechanisms by which students can contribute directly to the stock selection process. 9.3 Computer Access A substantial number of additional computers (including Macs) have been installed in the Library during November and December 2011, increasing the total number of ITS machines available for student use. Significant improvements have also been made to the speed, reliability and coverage of Wi-Fi within the Library to enable students to use their own laptops and other devices as appropriate. In recognition of this increase in IT capacity within the Library, an IT Help point is now operating from the Library Information Hub in the daytime during term. 9.4 Study spaces We are responding to student requests for more flat desk study spaces and putting these into the Library wherever possible. University of Sussex Library Survey December 2011 9 9.5 Opening Hours During Christmas and New Year 2011/12 we extended our opening hours in response to requests and will be extending weekday opening hours during the summer vacations from 2012. We have noted that there is a preference amongst undergraduate students that we open earlier on Sunday mornings during term-time and this is being investigated. 9.6 Environment We are working with Estates to ameliorate some of the issues around heating and ventilation that were not within the scope of the recent refurbishment project. 9.7 Marketing We have set up a number of campaigns to promote and market our existing resources. PGT. PGR) University of Sussex Library Survey December 2011 Range of books for background reading: student response 20 Selected representative comments from students • more copies of recommended course textbooks • be faster about getting new books in that are missing • you can't place a request on a book if the system says there is still one copy available even if it is missing. Why not just let students place requests when the book seems to be in low availability? • as a biologist I am very pleased with the book range the library has to offer for my course • give a greater range of books for science subjects, especially neuroscience • more engineering books related to our courses. Very few Engineers use the library as a resource due to this. The age of books is also a small issue. Newer books would be of use a engineering is a ever changing subject University of Sussex Library Survey December 2011 21 5.3 Range of online resources The Library provides me with a good range of online resources? 5.4 Ease of use of the website Information on the Library website is easy to find? University of Sussex Library Survey December 2011 22 5.5 Selection of study areas The Library has a good selection of study areas? Selected representative comments from UG students • basically, everything is great but we need more spaces to study • I prefer working at a desk with your own space and dislike the massive group working tables • more areas for silent study with power access • more casual study areas where you can talk with others University of Sussex Library Survey December 2011 23 Selected comments from PGT students • there need to be far more silent study areas, with desks that do not encourage talking. For example, enclosed desks rather than big tables. more enforcement/signs stating that these are silent areas, or just making the whole library silent • more completely silent areas, everyone talks everywhere. • I understand that different parts of the library operate differently, but the noise level in the library is really unacceptable. It is not a good environment to study and learn, and I often leave feeling frustrated. It would be helpful if staff made certain that noise is kept to a minimum, by asking people not to talk/eat when they can see that they are doing so Selected comments from PGR students • the library is just absolutely packed. It is not big enough for the number of students at Sussex. I can never find a computer. I queue to get in. I have to wait for work space. • have been involved (studying and/or working) at the library for eight years and am so impressed with all the changes. It is a way better library now - the staff has always been extremely helpful but now the actual layout, the seating arrangements, the work spaces are significantly improved. Also like the increase in the number of available computers. Well done! 25 comments from academics were concerned with noise levels in the Library, along the lines of “Less of a social space and more dedicated areas for silent study” and “Enforced quiet study space for students. Our students complain that the library is too noisy for serious work”. University of Sussex Library Survey December 2011 24 5.6 Staff How satisfied are you with the helpfulness of Library staff? University of Sussex Library Survey December 2011 25 Satisfaction with provision of computers in the Library: data from the student only response (UG, PGT and PGR) University of Sussex Library Survey December 2011 26 How satisfied are you with printing in the Library? Satisfaction with printing in the Library: data from the student only response (UG, PGT and PGR) University of Sussex Library Survey December 2011 27 Selected representative comments from students on computers and printing Computers: • PLEASE MORE COMPUTERS!! I waste so much of my time trying to find a computer to print essential material for my studies. I need to print something virtually every day, and unfortunately, waste so much time • also it would be nice if the first floor computer cluster had some sort of queuing system organised, rather than people having to circle like vultures. • more working computers with desk space, not just big cluster areas, area like the first floor open area • perhaps creating a zone where the computers can only be used for 10-15 minutes before you are logged out would be helpful, as well as increasing the number of computer areas • a laptop/notebook loaning scheme whereby students can borrow a laptop for a day for use inside the library for when there are no more desktop computers available • booking system for computers as I rarely manage to find available ones • ensure that library computers are only used for work-related purposes/studying • add more computers near the front entrance for students who want to use the catalogue to find books. There are just two computers up there, and queues frequently form up Printing: • more ways we can print without a desktop computer • not only is there only ONE print-credit machine which is constantly broken - but what is worse is that there is NO POSSIBILITY to print when you work on your own laptop • surely there is a way to enable wireless printing in the library somehow • reliable printers- can't begin to list the number of times a printer was out of paper University of Sussex Library Survey December 2011 28 5.8 Environment How satisfied are you with the Library environment (lighting/temperature etc.)? Comment: As the survey was launched there were a number of serious issues with the heating of the building, which have now been ameliorated to some degree.
