Today’s Matchup
“4 Downs” with the Mountaineers
1 - Saturday’s game will mark Liberty’s first-ever
matchup against a Sun Belt Conference opponent. It will also be the Flames’ first game against
Appalachian State since Sept. 21, 2002 and Liberty’s first visit to Boone since Sept. 1, 2001.
2 - This will be Liberty’s second game against an
FBS opponent in 2014, after the Flames opened
the year with a 56-29 loss at North Carolina on
Aug. 30. Liberty also faced a pair of FBS foes in
2013, including Kent State and Old Dominion.
3-
Liberty is in search of its third victory over
Appalachian State. Both of the Flames’ previous
wins over the Mountaineers have come at Kidd
Brewer Stadium, in 1993 and 1997. The Flames
are also seeking their third win all-time versus an
FBS opponent. The Flames recorded a 25-24 win
at Eastern Michigan on Oct. 14, 1989 and a 27-23
triumph at Ball State on Sept. 11, 2010.
4 -
Liberty is facing four North Carolina-based
squads during the 2014 season, including North
Carolina, Brevard, Appalachian State and Gardner-Webb. The Flames are 1-1 against Tar Heel
State teams thus far, with a win over Brevard and
a loss to North Carolina. That pushes Liberty’s alltime record against North Carolina-based teams
to 36-45-3.
Last Meeting with Appalachian State
Sept. 21, 2002
No. 4 Appalachian State 29, Liberty 22
Lynchburg, Va. (Williams Stadium)
•Liberty outgained No. 4 Appalachian State, 332301, but special teams played a key role in the
Mountaineers’ 29-22 win at Williams Stadium.
•In the second quarter, Appalachian State returned a blocked field goal 50 yards for a touchdown and recorded a safety when an errant snap
went out of the back of the end zone on a Liberty
punt attempt.
•Another errant snap on a Flames punt gave Appalachian State the ball on Liberty’s 7-yard line
late in the fourth quarter. Three plays later, Joe
Burchette threw the game-winning 8-yard TD
pass to Daniel Bettis with 3:00 to play.
•For Liberty, Dre Barnes finished with 18 carries
for 90 yards, along with a passing TD. Samkon
Gado had two catches for 85 yards and two TDs.
•Appalachian State’s Sean Jackson paced all players with 151 yards on 18 carries, including a
score.
•Starting QBs Gus Condon and Burchette combined to complete 12 of 35 passes on the day.

Liberty Athletics Hall of Famer Robby Justino has
held the program record for passing yards at 9,548
since wrapping up his career in 1992. Junior Josh
Woodrum could put that mark in jeopardy during
his final two seasons with the Flames, and this
chart will track his progress.
Entering the Appalachian State game, Woodrum
has thrown for 6,091 yards, putting him 516 yards
ahead of Justino at the same stage of his career.
Justino threw for a career-high 434 yards during the
seventh game of his junior season, a 38-28 Homecoming victory over Towson.
