Today’s Matchup
“4 Downs” with the Sycamores
1 - Saturday will mark Liberty’s first-ever contest
at Indiana State and the Flames’ first game in
the Hoosier State since Sept. 11, 2010. That day,
Liberty recorded a 27-23 victory at Ball State in
Muncie, Ind.
2 - Indiana State has already doubled its win total
from 2013, starting the year with a 2-1 record.
Most recently, the Sycamores posted a 27-20 win
at Ball State on Sept. 13, marking Indiana State’s
first win over the Cardinals since 1987.
3 - Liberty Athletics has enjoyed some memora-
ble moments in Terre Haute, highlighted by three
NCAA Division I men’s cross country individual
national titles at the LaVern Gibson Championship Cross Country Course. Josh McDougal was
victorious in 2007, while Sam Chelanga took top
honors in 2009 and 2010. In another non-football note, Indiana State alum Larry Bird wore a
pair of 3s on his Boston Celtics uniform during his
Hall of Fame NBA career, after leading the Sycamores to the 1979 NCAA Tournament national
championship game.
4 - Liberty will be aiming for its fourth victory over
a Missouri Valley Football Conference (MVFC)
opponent. The Flames are 3-10 all-time against
MVFC opposition, with two of the victories coming on the road. Six years ago today, Liberty was
victorious in its most recent MVFC matchup, 3128 at Youngstown State.
Last Meeting with Indiana State
Sept. 28, 1996
Indiana State 34, Liberty 10
Lynchburg, Va. (Williams Stadium)
•Liberty got off to a fast start in its only previous
meeting with Indiana State. The Flames led by a
10-6 count at the end of the first quarter, thanks
to a five-yard TD run by Lawrence Worthington
and a 33-yard FG by Phillip Harrelson.
•The Sycamores then scored 28 unanswered
points to end the game, aided by a strong rushing attack. Indiana State ran for 245 yards and
three scores, paced by Jason Potter (25 carries,
115 yards, 1 TD).
•Indiana State halted Liberty’s comeback attempt
by picking off three Flames passes on the afternoon.
•Liberty’s offensive leaders included Worthington
(16 carries, 54 yards, 1 TD) and fellow running
back Stacy Nobles, who totaled 66 all-purpose
yards off the bench.

his career. He would become the first Flame with

the second active Flame with 1,000 career receiving yards. Darrin Peterson reached the milestone earlier this season.

A Liberty Win Would ...
•Complete Liberty’s first unbeaten month of September (4-0) since the 2008 Flames went 3-0
during the month. Liberty also went unbeaten
during September in 1975, 1979, 1989 and 1997.
•Give the Flames their best five-game start to a
season (4-1) since the 2008 Flames opened the
year at 5-0.
• Be Liberty’s fourth straight win and ninth victory
in its last 10 games dating back to last season.
•Even the Flames’ all-time record against Indiana
State to 1-1.
•Improve Liberty’s all-time mark versus MVFC
foes to 4-10, including back-to-back victories.
•Give the Flames a 2-0 record in games played in
Indiana. Liberty won its only previous contest in
the Hoosier State, 27-23 at Ball State on Sept. 11,
2010.
•Be the Flames’ fourth victory in their last five
road contests, dating back to the 2013 season.
•Represent Liberty’s second straight road win

Flames had lost nine road non-conference games
in a row dating back to 2010.

Liberty Athletics Hall of Famer Robby Justino has
held the program record for passing yards at 9,548
since wrapping up his career in 1992. Junior Josh
Woodrum could put that mark in jeopardy during
his final two seasons with the Flames, and this
chart will track his progress.
Entering the Indiana State game, Woodrum has
thrown for 5,590 yards, putting him 444 yards
ahead of Justino at the same stage of his career.
Justino threw for 252 yards during the fifth game of
his junior season, a 20-9 victory at Delaware State.
