Fox Hills and South Kearns Elementary Schools • • • • • Fox Hills 587 school students 167 GT Magnet students 78 siblings (GT) / 91 Permits 7 relocatables classrooms South Kearns Title 1 FTE downsize class size OEK & Preschool programs 2 relocatable classrooms School Enrollment Bldg. cap History Fox Hills 845 700 = 120% 798, 852, 877, 842 South Kearns 396 535 = 74% 396, 390, 399, 396 Buy FTE prog. rooms Community Council Feedback • South Kearns – Sure we could house more students in our facility • ½ extra classroom next year (OEK) • More students = more relocatable classrooms – We are cautious to not loose our Title 1 status • Number 17 of 17 in order of qualification • Fox Hills – GT program has a positive influence at the school and a concerned perception about programs at a Title 1 school – Reduction in population may affect specialist time – “Should resident students change schools (boundaries) because of GT/sibling out-of-boundary students?” Possible What To Do • Continue Study – Meet with SCC / survey focus neighborhoods in August – Return to the Board in September – Prepare for an October open house • Discontinue – Though we might minimally balance populations we may not be constructively solving anything as we would need to move portable classrooms in order to bring more students to South Kearns Discussion Bennion Junior Feeder Pattern • Bennion Elementary and Westbrook Elementary feed into Bennion Junior High. Fifty percent of the Bennion Elementary boundary and 100% of Westbrook Elementary boundary feed into Cottonwood High. • Request was made to consider making the Bennion Junior High boundary feed only Taylorsville High. Community Council Feedback • Bennion Jr. – “We are not in favor or opposed: This is a neighborhood initiative but we are interested in knowing what the rest of community wants.” • Taylorsville Sr. – In favor of the proposal and recognizes a positive outcome to engage students with peers and community at Taylorsville High. • Cottonwood Sr. – Fewer students will impact academic program offerings and extra curricular programs. – Would current students still be bussed to CHS if this change occurs? – The 9th grade reconfiguration study creates a whole new variable.
