• The job growth that began in August 2003 was fairly widespread among the
major industry sectors. Employment gains in professional and business
services, in education and health, and in leisure and hospitality accounted for
about 60 percent of job growth over the time period.
• A robust housing market contributed to employment gains in construction and
in building-related industries.
• Between August 2003 and December 2005, employment declined in
manufacturing and in information.
