Move IT Forward By Taking a Step Back—to the Basics

Secure Mobility: Take the Quiz to Assess
Your Habits
Do you lock your smartphone or tablet? Open emails or text messages from people you don’t know? Encrypt work files that are
stored on your mobile device?
“Working securely outside the office, whether you telework or check work email on a tablet, requires a team effort from all
employees as well as the IT department,” says Julie Frutchey, with the Cisco® public sector team. The IT team implements
solutions for encrypting sensitive information, controlling access, preventing websites from installing malware on mobile devices,
and so on. Equally important are your habits, like locking your device.
Assess Your Mobile Security Habits
October is a good time to assess your mobile security habits because it’s National Cyber Security Awareness month, when
federal, state, and local governments and educational institutions collaborate to promote safe online practices. For employees,
these include:
• Create a password for all mobile devices you use for work, and don’t keep the passwords near your device.
• Install commercially available software, often free, that lets you find your mobile devices if you misplace them.
• Find out about and comply with your IT department’s policies about downloading applications to mobile devices you use for
work.
• Connect only from secure Wi-Fi connections, not public hotspots.
Recommendations for IT teams include:
• Provide VPN software for mobile devices that employees use for work.
• Implement solutions that enforce your security policies for web access.
• Encrypt data stored on mobile devices. Or, consider providing “virtual desktops” that physically reside in the data center, not
on the device. Someone who finds a tablet left behind in a taxi, for example, won’t find any files on it.
• Prevent data loss when employees lose their mobile devices by implementing a remote wipe function.
• Implement a threat defense solution that identifies suspicious network activity so that you can act quickly to prevent damage.
Take the Quiz
Working with Washington D.C.-based Mobile Work Exchange (previously Telework Exchange), Cisco has developed two online
security assessment quizzes, one for individuals and another for organizations. To get your “Secure Mobilometer” score, visit
