It was Liberty’s first extra-inning contest of the year. • During its five-game winning streak, Liberty has hit .314, while holding opponents to a .192 batting average. The hit streak is the longest for a Flame this season. • LHP Shawn Clowers recorded the win in Liberty’s 8-2 win in 11 innings at Duke, last Tuesday. Not only did he pitched two scoreless innings, but he also added an RBI single in his first collegiate at bat in the 11th inning. • Clowers gave Liberty a solid relief effort in his first appearance of the year against Ohio, 2/23. The LHP did not allow a run, scattering four hits over 4 2/3 innings. He struck out four and did not walk a batter. • LHP Jared Lyons allowed only two hits over seven innings in his first start of the year at Duke, last Tuesday. He struck out a career-high 10 batters in the contest. • RHP Trey Lambert ran his record to 3-1, last Saturday. Lambert pitched seven-plus innings, in 6-2 win over Kent State in game one of a doubleheader. • RHP Parker Bean moved his record to 3-1 on the season in Liberty’s 4-2 win over Kent State in game two of a doubleheader, Saturday. In its loss during the span, the Flames allowed only four runs. • Liberty is hitting .314 as a team over its last five games and .316 over its last nine. A Look Back at Kent State • Liberty swept a three-game series against the Kent State Golden Flashes at Liberty Baseball Stadium. • The Flames captured both ends of a doubleheader on Saturday, 6-2 and 4-2, and won 9-1 on Sunday. • 1B Alex Close hit .500 with six RBIs and three doubles during the weekend. He had a hit in each game. • In Saturday’s first game, Close went 3-for-4 with four RBIs. • RHP Trey Lambert moved to 3-1 on the year allowing two runs on six hits over seven-plus innings in the 6-2 game one win. • In the second game, RHP Parker Bean gave up two runs on five hits over a career-high eight innings in 4-2 victory. He also moves to 3-1. • RF Will Shepherd drove in 3B Dylan Allen with a double in the seventh inning to put Liberty in front for good in the contest. • Sunday, Liberty never trailed in the contest, scoring four runs in the second, en route to a 9-1 win. • RHP Carson Herndon extended his record to 2-1 on the season. He gave up one run on six hits over six innings. The right-hander struck out a career-high eight batters. Seiz Named NCBWA National Hitter, Conference Player of the Week • Liberty infielder Ryan Seiz was named the National Collegiate Baseball Writers (NCBWA) National Hitter of the Week and selected the Big South Conference Player of the Week for the period ending March 2. • Seiz becomes the second Liberty hitter to receive the weekly in-season award from the NCBWA, as OF Doug Bream was named the organization’s National Hitter of the Week in April of 2011. • The infielder is the first Flames’ player to earn the Big South Conference Player of the Week award this season. • Seiz posted a .579 batting average, scoring six times and driving in five runs during five games, as Liberty recorded a 4-1 mark during the week. He not only had a hit in each of the Flames’ five games, but collected three three-hit games in his last four contests. • Seiz had three doubles and a triple and belted his third home of the season, Sunday to finish the week with a 1.000 slugging percentage. In addition, he posted a .609 on base percentage. Perritt Named to Preseason All-American Teams, Stopper Watch List • Outfielder/pitcher Ashton Perritt was named to the National Collegiate Baseball Writers Association (NCBWA) and the Louisville Slugger/Collegiate Baseball Newspaper Preseason All-American teams as an utility player (two-way player). • The reliever was listed among 50 pitchers on the 2014 NCBWA Stopper of the Year Watch list. The award goes annually to the top closer in college baseball. • Perritt was selected to the NCBWA’s second team and the Collegiate Baseball Newspaper’s third team. • He becomes Liberty’s second player to garner Preseason All-American honors from the Collegiate Baseball Newspaper. The paper selected Aaron Grijalva as a Preseason All-American at first base in 2008. Toman Guides Flames to Best Division I Mark Over First Six Years • With a .619 winning percentage, head coach Jim Toman’s Flames have posted the highest NCAA Division I winning percentage of any head coach during his first six years at Liberty. Toman has guided the Flames to a 223-137-1 during his tenure. • Liberty has posted 35 or more wins in five of its six seasons under Toman. • Toman guided the Flames to the program’s first Big South Championship since 2000 and Liberty’s first appearance in a NCAA Regional final last season.
