2013 OSU Hermiston Agricultural Research and Extension Center Seed Lot Trial
Summary
One hundred three potato seed lots originating from eight U.S. states and three Canadian
provinces were planted in this year’s trial in Hermiston. Twenty four varieties representing both
fresh and processing markets were planted. Information on individual seed lots is presented in
Table 1 (emergence, viral, bacterial, and other seed borne problems). The four most numerous
entries were Russet Norkotah, including clonal selections, (23 lots), Russet Ranger (17 lots),
Russet Burbank (15 lots) and Shepody (11 lots). Sixty percent of the seed lots planted this year
did not show visual seed-borne PVY symptoms, while 18, 19, and 4% of the lots had <1, 1-5,
and >5% PVY infection, respectively. Furthermore, PVY was not detected in seed lots from
Nebraska or North Dakota, but was observed in 29, 32, 44, 50, and 100% of the seed lots from
Washington, Montana, Oregon, Idaho, and Nevada, respectively. Mosaic was observed in 21
and 100% of the Alberta and Saskatchewan seed lots, respectively. Marcy, Yukon Gold, Russet
Burbank, Shepody, Russet Norkotah, and Russet Ranger displayed a higher occurrence of PVY
infection with 100, 66, 53, 45, 43, 41% of the lots showing mosaic symptoms, respectively.
Black leg was found in less than 5% of the seed lots and the amount of black leg in any one seed
lot did not exceed 1%. Potato leaf-roll virus was not detected this year. One Russet Norkotah
seed lot from Washington had two plants that emerged expressing zebra chip disease symptoms.
These plants tested positive for the zebra chip pathogen. For the first time in more than 20 years
a seed lot was confirmed to have Bacterial Ring Rot.
