In this project,I have interviewed my aunt who lives in Wah Fu Estate in Southern
District. There is a beautiful sightseeing spot in there, that is the waterfall bay.
I have done an interview with her:
I:How many year have you been living here?
My aunt: About 18 years.
I:Do you know any things about the Waterfall Bay here?
My aunt: Yes. It is located in the Wah Fu estate near the Cyberport,I remember that it
has a story about it. It has been there for a long time, the story said that the British
troops want to have Hong Kong as their colony because they were attracted by this
beautiful waterfall. They thought that it is very beautiful and the water there was
sweet.
I: Wow, this story really shows how attractive it is. And is there anything special in the
Waterfall Bay Park apart from the waterfall?
My aunt: Yes, there is many Buddha put in the southern part of the park, facing the
sea but I don’t know why they are being put there. And also there is a barbecue
court, people can enjoy barbecue there.
I: Oh I see. Apart from the waterfall bay park, is there any more things special about
Wah Fu Estate?
My aunt: Oh yes, of course. Wah Fu Estate is about the first or second estate built in
Hong Kong. I think it has some old Hong Kong architectural features.
I: Oh, maybe. But I think it has undergone much renovation already. Thank you for
your information, aunt.
After I have made the interview I visited the waterfall, and found the
information of it.
Apart from the story my aunt told, there is some additional information ,this story
also told the origin of the name of Hong Kong.Since the troops thought the water
was sweet there, thus gave rise to the name "Hong Kong", meaning "fragrant
harbour" . And the waterfall was listed as one of the greatest view(「新安八景」) in
Qing Dynasty.
The Wah Fu Estate also have a significant historical value, it was the first estate built
in Hong Kong, it had once the most populated estate in Hong Kong,at that time,
50,000 people were living there.
For the Buddha, they are believed that they were once the resthome god,but the family
didn’t want it , so they were sent here.
After I visited the spot, I think the waterfall there is really beautiful, and there are
many Buddha around the rocky beach.
In conclusion, I think Wah Fu Estate is a really good sightseeing spot in southern
district for tourists, there is a beautiful and great waterfall that was recorded as one
of the greatest views in Qing Dynasty, and was believed as the origin of the name of
Hong Kong. Also ,I think it is a rare natural beauty in Hong Kong, it is a really
uncommon view we can see in the prosperous Hong Kong ,the tourist can experience the
another side of Hong Kong. Tourist can also have a look on the Buddha that full of Chinese
traditional culture and also the old Hong Kong architectural features .In addition, tourist
can also enjoy having barbecue and playing the facilitates in the park with their
family. As they can enjoy family activities and have sightseeing at there, so it is really
a good place for tourist of families to come there.
