NEWS:
US to boost exports of technology
Elanie Wu
Washington has agreed to allow more exports of advanced technology to China,
according to Chinese ambassador to the US Zhou Wenzhong ( 周文重 )
Mr Zhou said in Seattle that Beijing and Washington had worked out how to deal
with the problem of China’s trade surplus with the US.
“The two countries have reached a consensus on this issue … and the Chinese side
has made efforts〔to resolve the problems〕,” he said. “ The US also agrees to open the
export of advanced technology〔to China〕.”
Mr Zhou did not elaborate, but it is believe the relaxation of hi-tech exports to
China could include the sale of nuclear reactors. Washinghouse has been lobbying
Washington to lift a ban on such sales, but it was not immediately clear if an
announcement would be made during the US visit by President Hu Jintao.
The ambassador said Beijing would adhere to its policy of gradually reforming the
currency system. “On the issue of the renminbi, we have exchanged views with the
US many times,” he said.
“The Chinese side has made it clear that China will only carry out reforms of the
currency in the interest… of national development. We will emphasis on our own
initiative and the principal of proceeding gradually.
