F.4A Economic News Report Bianca Tsang (25) Angela Tse (26) NEWS: US to boost exports of technology Elanie Wu Washington has agreed to allow more exports of advanced technology to China, according to Chinese ambassador to the US Zhou Wenzhong ( 周文重 ) Mr Zhou said in Seattle that Beijing and Washington had worked out how to deal with the problem of China’s trade surplus with the US. “The two countries have reached a consensus on this issue … and the Chinese side has made efforts〔to resolve the problems〕,” he said. “ The US also agrees to open the export of advanced technology〔to China〕.” Mr Zhou did not elaborate, but it is believe the relaxation of hi-tech exports to China could include the sale of nuclear reactors. Washinghouse has been lobbying Washington to lift a ban on such sales, but it was not immediately clear if an announcement would be made during the US visit by President Hu Jintao. The ambassador said Beijing would adhere to its policy of gradually reforming the currency system. “On the issue of the renminbi, we have exchanged views with the US many times,” he said. “The Chinese side has made it clear that China will only carry out reforms of the currency in the interest… of national development. We will emphasis on our own initiative and the principal of proceeding gradually.
