Master of Arts in Counseling Program
COUN 582: CLINICAL MENTAL HEALTH
COUNSELING INTERNSHIP II
Faculty Availability:
I will be checking my College email at least once a day during the work week (Monday-Friday), and at least
once over the weekend, unless otherwise notified. I am also very willing and happy to communicate
individually with students as needed. If you have questions about the course (assignments, dates,
expectations, etc.) please email me or ask these questions at our weekly Adobe Connect sessions. If you
contact me individually, my commitment is to respond to you in 24 hours or less during the course. However
responses may be slower on the weekends since I generally take Sundays off. Consequently, if you have
questions about assignments or the course, please make every effort to send me those questions before the
weekend when the assignment is due so that I can respond in a timely fashion.
Faculty Expectations of Students:
Submission and Review of Video Sessions: You will record two (2) video recorded counseling sessions
for peer review. These recordings must be a minimum of 30 minutes and should not exceed 50 minutes.
More may be requested if the instructor or the site-supervisor feels it is necessary. Alternatives to video
recording will only be explored if absolutely necessary. You will be expected to review peer recordings
for discussion in weekly AC sessions.
Announcements: Please make sure that you read the announcements every time you log in to the course
or have your notifications set to receive announcements on a frequent basis. These will be updated
regularly with important course information. Please adjust your Canvas settings to receive notifications of
new announcements.
Mode of Instruction: Students will learn in a community-based agency where they will meet with actual
clients who have mental health diagnoses. Students will be supervised by an on-site qualified counselor
and a college-based supervisor. The student is to document at least 300 clock hours of supervised direct
and non-direct clinical experience. This course is primarily experiential with required in-person or on-line
group and individual supervisory meetings to discuss ongoing issues.
Asynchronous/Synchronous Learning: This course will require regular synchronous sessions for
individual and group supervision with the instructor. Other coursework will be asynchronous through the
Canvas site. You should perform a systems check with our student computer services office prior to your
first session to make sure your equipment is functioning properly. Group supervision will take place on
Tuesday or Thursday nights and actual dates will be announce close to the time of the beginning of class.
Professionalism: Client safety is of the utmost importance. To help keep your clients safe and have them
receive the appropriate care they need students should behave professionally and ethically by using all
your counseling resources such as knowing the ACA ethical standards of practice and receiving feedback
from your constituents and supervisors for improving your counseling knowledge and skill so your clients
benefit and you have a good internship experience.

Textbook and Other Course Materials:
Required:
American Psychiatric Association. (2000). Diagnostic and statistical manual of mental disorders
(5th Ed). Washington, D.C: Author.
American Psychological Association (2009). Publication manual of the American
Psychological Association (6th ed.). Washington, DC: Author.
Scott, J., Boylan, J.C., & Jungers, C.M. (2015). Practicum and Internship: Textbook and
Resource Guide for Counseling and Psychotherapy (5th ed.). New York, NY: Routledge.
Resources:
It is recommended that you have 1) a current text describing your theoretical orientation and 2) a
treatment planner for the population you will be working with. Please feel free to contact the instructor if
you need a recommendation.
Required Video Recording Technology: Students must use a digital video camera to record their
counseling sessions (mock or real), which are required in several courses in the program. You
are permitted to use the digital video camera of your choice. Regardless of the brand, make sure
you buy or borrow a camera with long enough battery life and memory to record at least 60
minutes. Information Technology Services (ITS) will provide tech support for the camera of your
choice but technical difficulties will not be an excuse for submitting an assignment late. Inform
your professor if you are having technical problems before the assignment is due. Submitting test
videos ahead of time may be beneficial. Please note that your video must be uploaded to the
College server and could take several hours to complete depending on the size of the file.
You are permitted to use a smart phone or iPad to record your sessions if you comply with the
following security measures that align with HIPAA provisions. Specifically, students must:
• keep the device in a key or combination locked space when you are away from it
• use a rigorous password to protect your device using a minimum of 8 characters with
upper and lowercase letters as well as special characters and/or numbers. This password
cannot be a word or name using the substitution of letters with numbers or readily
available numbers such as anniversary or birthday dates.
• implement carrier "lost phone/iPad" protection that will allow for the disabling of the
device if it is lost or stolen.
A signed consent form from the student/client or student’s/client’s guardian (if under the
age of 18) must be obtained before taping begins.
Students creating video recordings of counseling sessions and other course material that contains
client/student information must maintain the confidentiality of these materials by doing the
following:
1. Avoid including any identifying client/student information on materials
2. Labeling videos “confidential” before submission to any server
3. Submitting videos only to secure Messiah College servers: your Canvas Assignment link
or Messiah College Video Server Drive
Master of Arts in Counseling Program
4. Do not e-mail links or actual copies of video recorded sessions
5. Erasing copies of all materials including videos at the end of the course
Faculty will erase copies of all client/student related materials including videos held in Canvas at
the end of each semester. Videos held on the private Messiah College video server will be
deleted upon the student ceasing to be a student at Messiah.
Course Requirements:
Online Group or Individual Supervision Attendance and Participation (200 points for attending
all meetings, ANY missed meetings will result in a zero for this assignment). We will schedule
bi-weekly on-line group meetings and three individual meetings to discuss your counseling
skills, site situations, client issues and goals, and readings. Individual supervision will be
scheduled with each student by appointment and upon confirmation with the student will be
posted on the Course Schedule in Canvas. Attendance (on time) is both essential and required.
Participation is the foundation of the class. If emergencies arise, and you cannot attend a small
group or individual supervision meeting or will be late, please inform the professor as soon as
possible to determine how the meeting will be made up. Recorded video sessions with write-up
are due 72 hours prior to your assigned Adobe Connect session. If you are often late for our
meetings on-line, must leave early, and/or cannot attend each on-line small group or
individual meetings in full, you will not pass the course.
Case Study Presentation (100 points)
Students will present a case study during group supervision meetings with a video-recorded session. See
Appendix A for further instructions and what should be included in presentation. Please sign up for a
presentation date by the end of week three of the course. Write-ups and corresponding video clip are due
to the professor 72 hours before the case presentation.
Peer Video Review (100 points)
You will submit a video-recording of one of your counseling sessions for peer review. In addition, you
will provide feedback to your colleagues after viewing their video-recordings. Video-recordings must be
between 30-50 minutes. Feedback must be substantive and follow an outline that will be provided to you.
Group Leadership (100 points)
One time during the semester each student will lead a 30 minute discussion or activity during group
supervision. The activity can be discussed with the instructor ahead of time and can be based on a topic
of the student’s choice (approved by the professor).
Referral and Resource List (100 points)
By the mid-way point of your internship you should have developed a referral and resource list that is
appropriate for supplementing the care for clients at your internship site. See Appendix B for full
instructions.
Voicethread Group Discussions (200 points)
Throughout the semester you will reflect on your internship and supervision experiences by
completing four group discussion assignments using Voicethread. You will be required to post
audio or video responses to the Voicethread prompt by the due date 11:59 p.m. (EST). More
information about Voice Thread will be provided to you at the beginning of the course.
Master of Arts in Counseling Program
Submission of Weekly Hours & Semester Hours (100 points)
On a monthly basis you will need to submit your Clinical Mental Health Counseling Internship weekly
summary logs with your site supervisor’s signature to your Canvas assignment page. Due dates for these
logs are posted in Canvas. Your Final Summary Hours Log will be due on the last day of the
semester, uploaded to Canvas with both your site supervisor and my signatures added to this document.
If your site supervisor is signing electronically then he or she must e-mail this document directly
to me. Your weekly hour logs need to be submitted at the end of the month (each month= 4x) with each
worth 10 points and your final Summary Log document worth 60 points.
Evaluations (200 points)
Grades will be assigned to the Faculty’s Final Evaluation of the student and the Site Supervisor’s Final
evaluation of the student. However students must also submit site supervisor’s mid-term evaluation and
mid-term and final self evaluations. Faculty will also do a mid-term evaluation of the student. Failure to
complete or turn in any of these evaluations could result in a failing grade for the class. Final evaluations
will be worth 100 points each.
Internship Reflections: Powerpoint and Paper (200 points)
Students will create a narrated powerpoint and post it in Canvas for the class to review at midterm.
Students will also write an 8-10 page reflection paper on this internship experience and summarize their
accomplishments at the end of this internship. An outline for this powerpoint and paper will be provided
in Canvas.

Course Policies:
Reusing Assignments: Students should not reuse assignments or parts of assignments that they have
submitted in other classes (at Messiah or elsewhere) unless they have gotten permission from the current
course instructor to do so.
Extra Credit: Generally extra credit points are not awarded in this course.
Attendance: Punctual attendance and participation in all group and individual supervision sessions is
mandatory and the completion of all course assignments is required. Failure to attend a supervision
session may result in a failing grade for the course.
Late Assignments – All assignments (papers and exams) are due by 11:55 pm on the due date assigned.
Original and response posts to discussion questions are due by 11:55 pm on the due dates assigned. A 5%
deduction in the points available for each assignment will occur for each day an assignment is late
(unexcused). Failure to complete any assignment by the end of the course could result in the student
failing the whole course.
Missed Exams – Any student who misses an exam must contact the professor to make arrangements to
take a makeup exam. It will be up to the discretion of the professor whether the student will be allowed to
make up the exam and what format the makeup exam will take. Generally, contacting the professor before
the exam date to make other arrangements is preferred.
Returned Assignments – Assignments will be returned to the student for review of the assigned grade.
The assignment will include comments from the professor and an indication of the basis for the grade
assigned. If students have questions about the grade assigned it is up to the student to contact the
professor and set up a time to discuss the grade. Students may also ask for clarification about a grade
through email to the professor within three days of receiving the grade for any assignment. All
assignments will be reviewed, graded, and grades posted in the grade book one week from the due date.
Course Information
Self-Care
Part of the process of becoming a counselor is an ongoing commitment to self-awareness. Students often
have strong emotional reactions to the content of counseling courses or skill-development experiences.
Students may also become aware of something about themselves that impacts their present or future work
with clients. It is important to acknowledge these reactions and in some cases utilize the help of a
professional counselor to process them. Students should refer to the program website and student
handbook for recommendations about how to find a professional counselor. They are also encouraged to
consult with their instructor or advisor in deciding how and when to seek outside support.
Library and Librarian Assistance
The Library is an obvious source of information for research, presentations and projects. Currently,
Elizabeth (Liz) Kielley is the specific library liaison assigned to the social sciences disciplines. Although
any librarian is trained and prepared to assist you, Liz works specifically with the social sciences and is
most familiar with the resources and databases that relate to this field. Do not hesitate to contact her if
you are having trouble locating specific sources for your assignments, as she is more than willing to help
you.

Program Information
Writing Center
The Writing Center is available to any graduate student who has a desire to improve his/her writing. The
role of the center is to provide feedback (not editing) on written work. Feedback alerts you to the kinds of
errors you are making, lets you know when something is not clear, and suggests that you have not fully
supported an argument. Feedback does NOT correct your grammatical errors, rewrite your sentences, or
provide you with the specific points to support your argument. Ultimately, it is your responsibility to find
and use the resources you need to improve your writing but connecting with our Writing Center, either
online or face-to-face, is a good place to start.
Hardware and Software Recommendations
Student technology recommendations are found on the Information Technology Services website. These
guidelines have been put in place to best equip you to have an optimal technological experience in our
online programs.
Technical Support for Students
Technological support is available to all students during the days and times listed on the Information
Technology Services homepage. Students also have access to technical support (i.e. tutorials, help
functions, etc.) through the College’s portal, MCSquare, and through the College’s Learning Management
System.

Program Policies
Academic Integrity
The Academic Integrity Policy for Graduate Students is found in the graduate student handbook. Primary
responsibility for knowledge of and compliance with this policy rests with the student.
Americans with Disabilities Act
Any student whose disability falls within ADA guidelines should inform the instructor at the
beginning of the semester of any special accommodations or equipment needs necessary to
complete the requirements for this course. Students must register documentation with the Office
of Disability Services. Contact [email protected], (717) 796-5382.
Statement of Copyright Protection
The materials in this Messiah College course are only for the use of students enrolled in this course for
purposes associated with this course and may not be further disseminated.
Statement of Confidentiality
Students may be asked to post written work and to engage in written dialog with other class members
within an LMS. The student should be aware that although confidentiality within the course environment
is encouraged, it is possible that users in and outside the course may have access to course content.

Guidelines for Case Presentation II: COUN 582
In preparing for your group presentation, you should select a client with whom you are having some
difficulty IN TERMS OF THE CLIENT’S DIAGNOSIS (e.g. differential diagnosis, incorrect
diagnosis, unclear diagnosis, dual-diagnosis, diagnosis you have not been exposed to before). Prior
to group supervision, you should organize the following information about your client and your
experiences with him/her. Write a summary of the information outlined below to distribute to your peers
(perhaps in PowerPoint format). This should be sent to the instructor 24 hours before group supervision.
If possible, please also submit a brief audio/video presentation of the chosen session of at least 10
minutes. Your introduction and review of the audio/video should last no more than 20 minutes. This
leaves the majority of the time for feedback and comments from your peers and supervisor. PLEASE
REMEMBER TO MAINTAIN THE CONFIDENTIALITY OF YOUR CLIENTS BY NOT WRITING
ANY INFORMATION THAT WOULD IDENTIFY THEM SPECIFICALLY. Your case presentation
should include the following information:
