Multimedia Taps 2-Way and 4-Way Revisions A through G When Used with the Power Distribution Unit (SGPDU2/4) Technical Bulletin Overview Purpose The purpose of this document is to provide installation instructions for adding a pair of ground brackets to 2-way and 4-way Multimedia Taps (Revisions A through G) that may be used in conjunction with a Power Distribution Unit (PDU). Who Should Use This Document This document is intended for customers using a Cisco PDU with standard profile 2-way and 4-way Multimedia Taps. There is no grounding issue with any version of the 8-way Multimedia Taps. Qualified Personnel Only appropriately qualified and skilled service personnel should attempt to install, operate, maintain, and service this product. WARNING: Allow only qualified and skilled personnel to install, operate, maintain, and service this product. Otherwise, personal injury or equipment damage may occur. The ground fingers of the Rev A and B PDU may not be able to make sufficient contact with the Rev A through G taps. Refer to the illustration below for the location of the PDU ground fingers. The ground surface of the Multimedia Tap on these older versions is limited by the PWB soldermask. If the ground fingers from the PDU do not make proper contact with the faceplate ground, you may see a glitch in the response frequency in the range of 600 MHz to 750 MHz. Note: Multimedia Taps with Revision H or later (those shipped since ~ March 2000) do not require this rework. The ground surface area for these units is sufficient for grounding all revisions of PDUs. 4013835 Rev D 3 Issue and Solution Refer to the illustration below for a comparison of the ground surface between taps manufactured prior to Revision H and to Revision H or later taps. Additionally, it is not necessary to add the ground bracket to any revision of tap being used with a Revision C or later PDU (those shipped since ~ Sept 2004). An additional ground finger added to the Revision C and later PDUs allows them to work consistently with all revisions of taps. Refer to the illustration below for the location of the part number and revision for the taps. Solution On standard profile Multimedia Taps 2-way and 4-way manufactured prior to Revision H, a ground bracket should be added to the surface between two mounting screws (in two places) to increase the ground surface area for the PDU ground fingers. Refer to Bracket Installation Procedure (on page 5). 4 4013835 Rev D Issue and Solution Bracket Installation Procedure CAUTION: Do not remove the protective plastic cover that is attached to the tap circuit board. Access to the screws that will fasten the ground bracket will be accessible with this cover in place. 4013835 Rev D 1 Remove the faceplate from the tap housing. 2 Insert the ground brackets between the circuit board and the head of each of the two screws. This ground bracket is to be installed in two places as shown in the illustration below. 3 Screws should be re-torqued from 5 to 8 in-lbs (0.56 to 0.90 nm) prior to reinstalling the faceplate onto the housing. 5 For Information For Information If You Have Questions If you have technical questions, call Cisco Services for assistance.
