1. Introduction to the School
St. Francis’ Canossian College was founded by the Canossian Daughters of
Charity, missionaries from Italy in 1869.
The School initially offered a basic education to the poor and needy children
living in Wanchai district. Over the years it expanded and developed into a coeducational primary school and then into a secondary girls’ college.
St. Francis’ is a grant-in-aid secondary school, consisting of S1 to S6 classes,
with about 800 students and around 70 staff. It is an English Medium of
Instruction School.
Following the teachings of Christ and the vision of the Foundress, St. Magdalene
of Canossa, the Sisters and teachers are dedicated in their commitment to
offering a quality education.
This quality education places great emphasis on an all-round education. The
focus is on helping students to develop their full potential both academically
and in terms of personal, social and moral development.
The school motto: ‘Veritas In Charitate – Live by the Truth in Love’ places
special value upon spiritual growth, social awareness and compassion, along
with a clear sense of justice.
2. Students’ Profile
Student enrolment was 796 in September 2013. There are four streams from S1
to S6. The average attendance in the year 2013-2014 has been 97.53 %. There
are 96 Catholic students making up 12.06 % of the total student population.

5. Concerns and Actions 2013 - 2014
School Redevelopment Plan
St. Francis’ Canossian College’s application for in-situ redevelopment of its
premises on Kennedy Road received government approval in December 2010. The redevelopment project, divided into two phases, involves demolition of the
substandard school premises, renovation of the assembly hall block and construction
of new school buildings. Works comply with the standards for a 24-classroom
secondary school, as stipulated by the government. Phase 1 construction works
began in March 2012 and it is to be completed in August 2014. The School has been working closely with consultants and EDB officials to ensure
all required tasks are completed timely, but given unforeseen circumstances, there is
expected to be delay in the completion.
We are extremely grateful for the dedicated efforts of the Fund-raising Committee,
chaired by Sr. Marie Remedios and comprising alumnae and parents. Different fundraising events were held during the course of the academic year, but the highlight
was the “Bring Back Our Angels” Variety Show which was successfully held on
13th July 2013. It was officiated by our alumna and the honourable Chief Secretary
for Administration Ms. Carrie Lam. The solo piano recital by Ms. Colleen Lee, the
spectacular musical “Dream in Motion” by a hundred students, a dance performance
by the SFCS Dance Team and singing by the members of the School Choir won the
hearts of the audience. Indeed, it was a memorable gathering of the SFCC family
that every Franciscans past and present can be proud of. Of course, what stole the
show was the surprise performance by the Singing Nuns!
We are also pleased to report that only in two years’ time the “Bring Back Our
Angels” Campaign has successfully reached its fund raising target!
To upgrade the academic standard of students by catering for learner
diversity
In view of the different interests, needs and abilities of students, it is necessary for
the school to cater for learner diversity so as to upgrade the academic standard of
the students.
Towards such ends, the school has adopted various learning and teaching strategies
to help different students to learn. These include adapting and restructuring the
8
curriculum, employing varied teaching and learning strategies, making special
lesson arrangements and revising the assessment methods across the levels.
Professional advice has been sought to facilitate the school to devise the appropriate
measures. Mr. Cheung Man Wai, Principal of Shatin Tsung Tsin Secondary School,
was invited to conduct a staff development workshop on quantitative analysis of
students’ academic performance. Apart from working assiduously to prepare for and
implement the above measures, teachers continued to equip themselves by attending
relevant seminars and workshops. Besides, the school participated in the research
on “Hong Kong In-service Teachers’ Self-efficacy and Readiness for Differentiated
Instruction for Diverse Learners” organized by the CUHK. Such an exercise enabled
the teachers to understand and review their readiness and efficacy for catering for
learner diversity.
The PSHE curriculum in S1 was restructured based on the review carried out
previously to better prepare the junior form students for the NAS Liberal Studies
and electives. Integrated Humanities was replaced by History, Geography and a new
subject, Life and Society.
To further consolidate students’ foundation for the HKDSE curriculum, we continued
to implement project learning in various areas in S1, S2 and S4. In addition to the
Language Arts lessons in S2 and S3 so as to develop students’ language skills and
creativity, Project Learning on aesthetic appreciation was also introduced in S4 to
enrich students’ other learning experiences.
Based on the results of the student survey carried out in March 2014, the subject
offer for NAS was formulated. Seminars were held for both the S3 students and
their parents to prepare them for the subject choice. A seminar was conducted for
parents in March 2014 to introduce the DSE subjects while another one was held in
May 2014 for both parents and students on matters concerning the choice of DSE
electives and the university entry requirements. Talks were held in February for
students on subjects offered by the school and related matters. The choice of subjects
was then carried out in late May.
To reinforce the concept of courtesy in our students
The theme ‘Courtesy’ is our focus for three consecutive years (i.e. 2012 – 2015). It
aims at enabling students to be considerate towards the feelings of others and care
for the well-being and needs of others so that they will live in harmony with one
another.
In the academic year 2013-2014, we collaborated with St. James’ Settlement to
9
organise a series of programmes on the main theme.
In the first programme, we were honoured to have Mr. Stanley Cheung (張潤衡
先生), one of the survivors of the Pak Sin Leng hill fire in 1996. He shared with
our students the importance of courtesy in building a harmonious relationship with
others.
In the second programme, we were delighted to invite Mr. Alan Lau (劉李林先生),
the Project Development Manager of St. James’ Settlement, to share his perception
of the theme with our students. He encouraged our students to reflect on their daily
experiences and understand the importance of courtesy.
Two Home Programmes were also organised to enhance students’ understanding
of the main theme. An Inter-class Board Decoration Competition was also held to
arouse students’ awareness of the main theme.
Collaborative Processes
With its constant commitment to quality and emphasis on continuous development,
our school has adopted a transparent and accountable approach to decision making.
The participatory and collaborative framework, involving the Incorporated
Management Committee (IMC), the School Administration Team and the general
staff, provides a forum for the views of the different key stakeholders and caters for
the holistic development of the entire school community.
The IMC comprised of diverse membership of elected parent, alumni, teacher
representative and independent professional acts as a springboard for innovative
ideas on all aspects of school development. In addition, on important issues, such as
school policies, the formulation of School Development Plan, Annual School Plan
and the allocation of resources and duties, teachers’ opinions are solicited before
reaching the final decision.
This consultative mechanism holds promise for the progress of our school with its
vision for excellence in education.
10
Learning with IT
With the rapid development in technology and associated pedagogies, computers and
the Internet have become essential parts of our lives and driving forces in education. As part of the ongoing effort to spread the benefits of IT, digital resources have been
continually enriched to meet learning and teaching needs. This year our senior form
students have benefited from the Online Question Bank (OQB) which was launched
by the Hong Kong Education City in partnership with the Hong Kong Examination
and Assessment Authority. This OQB platform aims to motivate students’ in their
self-directed assessment and learning.
Once again, our school harnessed the power of IT in enhancing students’ learning and
the effectiveness of teaching. Given this, students have acquired the necessary skills
in the use of IT as an information retrieval, knowledge enquiry, communication,
collaboration, analytical and personal development tool. They have demonstrated
their skills in every subject as reflected by the integrated IT assessment in its
respective curriculum. Furthermore, the Learning Management System (LMS) has
continued to function as a platform to foster the self-learning culture. The system
facilitates uploading of notes, assignments and resources for the development of
students’ self-learning skills. In addition, our students have benefited from the use
of the system, called “iPortfolios”, in managing their learning records in preparation
for the Student Learning Profile (SLP) under the New Academic Structure (NAS). The SLP chronicles students’ academic journey through their NSS years.
Independent Learning
This year the ILC has continued to function as a Centre for Independent Learning. The students access learning tasks in all three language areas - English, Chinese and
Putonghua. These tasks develop all the skill areas of language learning and students
are also offered a range of multimedia learning tools such as CD Roms, websites
and DVDs to enhance and extend their language skills. The ILC serves its role as a
practical and necessary tool towards the tri-lingual, bi-literate education.
The use of the ILC has been incorporated into the curriculum at some levels. Selected students are also directed there on a referral basis to focus on specific areas
of need. In addition, students come voluntarily and make their own choices of
learning materials.
A teacher is stationed in the centre as facilitator for this independent student learning
and has made herself available for this purpose every lunchtime and every day after
school until 4:45 p.m.
11
Learning through Extensive Reading
This is the fourteenth successful year of the ‘DEAR’ (Drop Everything And Read)
programme which was initiated in September 2001. It has fostered a reading culture
in school. DEAR lessons are held twice a cycle for S1 and S2, and once a cycle for
S3 to S6 during which students are encouraged to read books of their choice (Chinese or English) and at their own pace. In addition, students’ exemplary book reports
and book covers are published on the ‘DEAR’ website. Through this structured
and systematic reading programme, students can develop their ability to understand,
enjoy and appreciate creative works in Chinese and English by writers from many
cultures.
Reinforcing Language Learning
The school has always been an EMI school. A bridging programme was conducted
in summer to help the incoming S1 students to adapt to the medium of instruction.
During the year, programmes were organised to promote a conducive atmosphere
for the use of English in the whole school. In addition, intensive remedial classes
were conducted for S1 to S3 potential achievers during lunch time, after school and
on Saturdays. Such lessons were also organized for a few S4 and S5 students during
their free lessons. These aimed at strengthening students’ English language foundation.

8.Appreciation
We wish to thank His Lordship Cardinal, Reverend John Tong, Bishop of Hong
Kong, and the clergy of our Parish and Diocese for their spiritual assistance and
concern. Our gratitude also goes to the Incorporated Management Committee,
the Secretary for Education Bureau and its members for their directives, advice
and support.
We extend our grateful appreciation to Mr. Kan Hang Kuen for his 25 years of
meritorious service and contributions to our school. His vision, dedication and
determination towards his work are greatly valued and respected by colleagues
and students alike.
To all our benefactors, the PTA and PSA, we would like to express our sincere
appreciation for their invaluable guidance, co-operation and generous support.
Last, but not least, our appreciation goes to all the teachers, office and janitor
staff, for the devotion to their work as this has made St. Francis’ a happy place
for growth and learning.
May God bless and reward every effort and fill every heart with peace and joy.
Appreciation and Gratitude
for 25 Years of Dedicated Service
Mr. Kan Hang Kuen
