The career development goal is to gain skills in econometrics and primary data collection. Principal responsibilities: Lead research project; complete career development goals; participate in mentored activities and research. Title: The effects of increasing economic resources on obesity: A quasi-experimental study. 12/1/2011 – 12/31/2012, Health Disparities Working Group & Robert Wood Johnson Foundation (UCSF). Principal Investigator: Jessica Jones-Smith; Award: $6,722 Main Objective: Use seed funds to create a data set that combines information about casinos, community-level economic activity, and information about children’s BMI. Principal Responsibilities: Supervise the creation of a dataset from disparate, publicly available sources. Attend meetings of the California Rural Indian Health Board. Title: The foods in my neighborhood study: Can supermarkets in low-income neighborhoods improve dietary intake? 3/1/2012 – 3/1/2013, Berkeley Population Center Principal Investigator: Barbara Laraia & Jessica Jones-Smith; Award: $9,300 Main Objectives: The goal of this project is to evaluate the impact of a new supermarket on the dietary intake of residents living nearby the market using a natural experiment approach. Principal Responsibilities: Design and implement a baseline survey to measure dietary intake of participants in “treatment” and “control” neighborhoods. Title: Using SITAR (Super-Imposition by Translation And Rotation) methods to analyze children’s longitudinal growth trajectories in two unique datasets. 1/2011 - 12/2011. ADDITIONAL INFORMATION Personal statement of research and research objectives I am a nutrition epidemiologist and my research focuses on socioeconomic and contextual correlates of nutrition-related chronic diseases across the life-course. My past and current research pertains to 1) socioeconomic status, obesity, and nutrition transitions in low- and middle-income countries, 2) health disparities in nutrition-related conditions in the US, and 3) early life risk factors for chronic disease. My long-term goal is to effectively bridge nutrition, epidemiology, and public health with econometrics to investigate structural approaches aimed at improving nutrition-related health among disadvantaged populations.
