PEACEBUILDER TRIP TO IRELAND JAN 11-18 2015 Sunday January 11th: Depart USA for Ireland Monday January 12th: Arrive Dublin Airport & meet with group representatives. Travel to Dublin Hotel for breakfast & check in. 2pm-5pm. Walking tour of Dublin City including National Museum, General Post Office (1916 Rising), Garden of Remembrance, Customs House & Famine Sculptures. 7pm Reception and Launch of CRCC Global Peacebuilders Project at Club Na Muinteoiri, Parnell Square. Drew University welcomes you to the launch of the Peace Trip with a keynote address by Niall O’Down, a major participant of the Irish Peace Process. Irish Minister of State for Culture, Joe McHugh will also speak. Tuesday January 13th Dublin to Donegal Depart Hotel at 10am. 10.30am Visit to the Boyne Valley for a fully guided tour of the Brú Na Bóinne site, including a visit inside one of the chambers at Newgrange or Dowth. These burial chambers pre-date Stonehenge, and it’s a must-see visit. Lunch at the Newgrange restaurant. Continue towards Donegal- Stop at Peace Statue, Belturbet (between Cavan in the Republic of Ireland and Fermanagh in Northern Ireland. The journey from the East of Ireland to the West also goes in and out of Northern Ireland – we will cross the border at Belturbet and again at Beleek. We arrive at our accommodation in time for dinner, and a fun icebreaking session at Donegal Adventure Centre. Cross-border initiatives in peace building have often involved effective team-building activities and instructors at the Donegal Adventure Centre will lend their experience and provide a fun session. The evening will conclude with an informal reception at the 51 bar, with traditional music & Irish ‘craic’! Wednesday January 14th Day Trip to Derry City Morning Lecture- Northern Ireland 1968-2010. After a morning lecture, we travel to Derry City, in Northern Ireland. We will visit the Bogside area, site of Bloody Sunday & Civil Rights Marches. Lunch at Gasworks Community Centre, Bogside. - a large exhibition of the political history of Northern Ireland including internment, the Long Kesh Hunger Strikes and the campaign to bring about a Peace Process. After lunch, we will pay a visit to Magee College, to see some of the work being done on music and conflict resolution in Northern Ireland. We finish with a walking tour of the medieval Derry City walls. Thursday January 15th Two options available today: Field Trip to Belfast -travel to Belfast City and visit the communities of the Falls Road, the Shankhill Road, and the Belfast Peace Wall. Alternatively, for those interested in the history and culture of the border counties, Niamh will be leading a trip to Yeats Country, including Ben Bulben and Drumcliff, Parkes Castle, Glencar Waterfall and a visit to the Yeats Society in Sligo Town. A visit to the Model Art Gallery is also an option. Launch of the Drew Transatlantic Conference Thursday 15th January. At 7pm on Thursday evening, all Peacebuilders are invited to the Opening of the Drew University Transatlantic Connections Conference, with Keynote speaker, humanitarian Don Mullan. The evening will include an opportunity to meet many local people from the border communities and counties, and entertainment will be provided by The Henry Girls. Friday 16th Transatlantic Conference Panels. . On Friday, you have a range of conference panels to choose from- all in the realm of Irish Studies & Culture. Easkey Britton will be speaking about her work in Iraq, Sophie Griegson on her work in Kabul. On Friday Evening, the keynote speaker will be Professor Christine Kinealy, and the evening will conclude with a performance of Irish Theatre and live acoustic performance by guitar virtuoso, Johnny Gallagher. Saturday 17th: 9.30am-5pm Peace Panels will be chaired by Professor Jonathan We have a range of speakers from Ireland, Northern Ireland, USA and other parts of the world where conflict and conflict resolution has to be addressed. Evening: The Saturday Keynote will be by poet, historian and activist Theo Dorgan. We will also have an award for best presentation by young peace builders, and enjoy the Gala dinner & music evening to conclude the trip & conference. . DEPART FROM BUNDORAN ON SUNDAY 18th JAN We will have you in Dublin Airport at approx. noon on Sunday 18 th Jan, or if you’re staying on in Dublin City, we will have you there approx. 12.45pm. Please give yourself at least two hours minimum to check in for your flight.
