This documentary film tells the remarkable story of Francisca Halamajowa, a
Polish-Catholic woman who rescued 16 of her Jewish neighbors during the
Holocaust, while cleverly passing herself off as a Nazi sympathizer.
On the eve of World War II, more than 6,000 Jews lived in Sokal, Poland. By the
end, only about 30 survived, half of them rescued by Halamajowa. For close to two
years she hid her Jewish neighbors in her tiny home – in the hayloft of her pigsty
and in a hole dug in her kitchen floor – cooking and caring for them. And she did
this right under the noses of hostile neighbors and German troops camped on her
property.
The screening will be followed by a Q & A session with Fran (Fay) Malkin, one
of the hidden children that Francisca Halamajowa saved.
