SCOTTSDALE COMMUNITY COLLEGE
CERTIFICATE IN RETAIL MANAGEMENT*
Why Retail Management?
Retail managers are constantly needed in the dynamic and
growing retail industry. While many people work as store
sales associates, only the elite will become store managers
that command higher salaries. The U.S. Bureau of Labor
projects consistent demand for management positions at
salaries ranging from $37,000 to $60,000.
What Does a Retail Manager Do?
Retail managers are in charge of the daily efficient and profitable operation of a store. They may
manage stores that sell a specific line of merchandise, such as clothing or electronics products,
or that sell a wide variety of merchandise, such as a department store. They are the ultimate
general manager in charge of a small or medium-sized business.
The most successful retail managers have both personal skills and technical training. They must
have excellent interpersonal and leadership skills, and they must know how to merchandise, set
up displays, and purchase products. Some retail employers require future retail managers to
have a college degree in business.
