Health, Safety, Security and Risk Management Program for Global Education At Drew, we take the safety and well-being of our students – whether in Madison, NJ or around the globe – very seriously. While education abroad is intellectually and personally rewarding, it is natural to concern ourselves with issues of safety and security when traveling internationally. To that end, the Center for Global Education has in place a health, safety, security and risk management program for all of our global education operations. Total safety cannot, of course, be guaranteed abroad, just as it cannot be guaranteed in the United States. However, to mitigate possible risks, Drew follows the following protocols: The Center for Global Education receives and monitors safety and security alerts and updates on a daily basis for all of our global education locations, consulting both private and governmental global security sources and experts. We routinely consult with other study abroad program providers operating in the regions where we operate our programs. All students enrolled in our global education programs abroad are required to register with the US State Department’s Smart Traveler Enrollment Program (STEP), which allows U.S. citizens traveling abroad to enroll their trip with the nearest U.S. Embassy or Consulate. This helps the U.S. Embassy contact US citizens in an emergency. Drew University is insured through Educational & Institutional Insurance Administrators, Inc. (EIIA). Drew’s membership in EIIA’s International Travel Program includes broad, internationally valid insurance coverage and travel assistance to students, faculty and staff participating in international programs. As part of our program orientations, we provide students with instructions on what to do in the event of an emergency. Students are expected to carry Emergency Contact Cards containing emergency contact information and primary and secondary meeting locations. Drew’s Office of Public Safety serves as our emergency call number: 973-408-3379. This number is staffed 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, for emergencies and crises. Program directors carry with them student phone numbers as well as phone numbers and email addressed for students’ designated emergency contacts. We provide key safety information as part of the post acceptance process. Guidelines for safe travel and a link to the latest US State Department country specific information are posted in every student’s Center for Global Education account. Students are required to complete a Travel Health Form prior to departure. The form allows them to disclose underlying medical conditions and/or use of prescription medications of which a program director or medical care professional should be aware in the event of an emergency. We also provide students with Standing Health Orders which reflect the Center for Disease Control’s official health recommendations for travel to a particular region. For each program, we confirm the locations of adequate medical facilities, including a hospital or clinic, within a reasonable distance given local transportation. Our housing arrangements, classroom facilities and site visits in each program location are selected with safety and security in mind and in cooperation with local partners with whom we generally have long and trusting partnerships. At Drew, student safety comes first and we strive to provide a safe and healthy learning environment in which to study abroad.
