FACT
BOOK
2013-2014
Preface
The 2013-2014 Fact Book documents the academic, financial, and institutional characteristics
of Messiah College for the academic year and through time. The Fact Book largely captures the
state of the campus during the “Fall Snapshot,” which occurs after the 10th day of classes. The
Fall 2013 Snapshot was taken on September 17, 2013. It is a snapshot of a dynamic Messiah
College that describes the characteristics or changes of the campus through time. The Fact
Book also collects the information needed for federal and state reporting, as well as publishinghouse surveys. The Institutional Research Office has annually collected this information and
presented tabular and graphic summaries on the characteristics of Messiah’s students, the
faculty and staff, finances, facilities, development, and alumni. Although the Fact Book was
compiled by the Institutional Research Office, it draws upon and reflects the contributions of
academic and administrative units across campus. We would like to thank each and every
individual and office that assisted in the preparation of this publication.
The Fact Book is intended to be a consistent reference for describing Messiah College’s
institutional characteristics, the campus context, and trends. In addition, the Fact Book can be
used as an official source of basic historical data. It serves as an aid for internal projects and
strategic planning, and it should be considered a source for responding to requests from
external agencies. More detailed information is often available by contacting the Institutional
Research Office.
The Fact Book will also be available, for internal use only, on the Institutional Research web
page (http://www.messiah.edu/offices/research/) located on Messiah’s web site. Please contact
us at any time with questions, clarifications, or suggestions for future editions.

External Student-Faculty Ratio
Student-Faculty Ratio

Internal Student-Faculty Ratios
2
Instructional Student-Faculty Ratio
Departmental Student-Faculty Ratio3
1
Defined as Student FTE/Faculty FTE.
Student FTE = the number of full-time undergraduate students, plus one-third of the part-time
undergraduate students.
Faculty FTE = the number of full-time faculty contracted to provide instruction plus one-third of the
part-time faculty.
Purpose: This ratio is defined by external reporting agencies (e.g., IPEDS, Common Data Set, US News &
World Report).
2
Defined as Instructional Student FTE/Instructional Faculty FTE.
Instructional Student FTE = load units taught by full-time and part-time faculty divided by the
average number of hours attempted by full-time students during the academic year.
Instructional Faculty FTE is load units taught by full-time and part-time faculty divided by 24.
Purpose: This ratio provides a relatively accurate count of the faculty instructional cost to deliver the
curriculum to our undergraduate students. The assumption is that the lower the instructional student-faculty
ratio the higher the quality of instruction due to the fact that the College is applying more instructional faculty
FTE to delivering the curriculum.
3
Defined as Student FTE/Departmental Faculty FTE.
Student FTE = the number of full-time undergraduate students, plus one-third of the part-time
undergraduate students.
Departmental Faculty FTE = all departmentally related load units assigned to full-time and part-time
faculty during the academic year divided by 24.
Purpose: This ratio provides a relatively accurate count of the departmental personnel cost (beyond the direct
faculty costs) to deliver the curriculum to our undergraduate students.

Partial fiscal year.
3
Considered full-time for the entire fiscal year with 18 credits, full-time in fall and spring with 6 credits, and full-time in late and early summer with 3 credits. Prior to late
summer 2011, full-time was based on 9 credits.

fall and spring term. Starting in late summer 2011, the graduate program had a late summer, fall, spring, and early summer term. Please take this into consideration when
interpreting the data.
