ABOUT THE SURVEY
The purpose of the annual post-graduate survey is to capture information on the employment and graduate
school status of Messiah College alumni within six to nine months of graduation. Statistics provided are based
on information received through a variety of methods. First, a questionnaire was conducted at the cap and
gown distribution in May. In September and then in November, an electronic follow-up survey was sent to all
graduates who initially responded “still seeking” or didn’t respond to the cap and gown survey. From there,
information was gathered from phone surveys and updated professional profiles on social media sites such as
LinkedIn. Finally, a request was distributed to Messiah educators for any additional information on graduates
whose status remained unknown.
Through this extensive process, responses were collected from 82 percent of the Class of 2010.
The goal of this report is to provide summary highlights, as well as a breakdown by academic departments,
of the post-graduate activity for the Class of 2010.
GENERAL SUMMARY
Graduates of the Class of 2010 were asked to identify their primary activity six to nine months after
graduation.
80% of the Class of 2010 who responded to this survey were employed or in a graduate
or professional program within six to nine months after graduation.

GEOGRAPHIC DESTINATIONS
The geographic destinations for the Class of 2010 spanned the United States as well as international
locations. In the U.S., the Northeast continues to be the strongest draw for Messiah graduates, constituting
approximately 85% of the graduates. Of the remaining graduates, 4% relocated to the Midwest, those in the
West totaled 4%, and the Southern states claimed 5%. International destinations totaled 2%, and include
China, The Dominican Republic, Honduras, Ireland, Japan, Kenya, Spain, and Tanzania.
The Northeast continues to be the strongest draw for Messiah graduates, constituting
approximately 85% of the graduates.

20 percent of the Class of 2010 survey respondents reported graduate or professional school as their
primary activity following graduation. The following graph displays fields of study which represent graduate

NATIONAL COMPARISONS
The statistics presented in this report must be presented within the nation's current economic context.
According to the National Association of College's and Employers:
"The Class of 2010 faced a difficult job market. The nation’s unemployment rate peaked during the fall of their
senior year, reaching a level that had not been experienced for nearly 30 years. These graduates witnessed the
struggle the Class of 2009 faced in finding a job—in sharp contrast to the classes that graduated from 2005
through 2008. Therefore, it is not surprising that this year’s graduates differed from previous classes in what they
planned to do immediately after getting their degrees. The principal difference between the plans for this year’s
graduates and those of previous years is that 2010 graduates are less likely to enter the work force directly after
college.
Just over 24 percent (24.4 percent) of applicants had a job secured for after graduation. In 2009, only 19.7
percent had a job in hand, while in 2007 more than 50 percent of senior applicants had secured a job to go to
after graduation."

Thus, friends and supporters of Messiah College can gain confidence through the statistics about our
graduating class presented in this report. The national numbers prove that even in these tough times, our
recent graduates are able to rise above the challenges presented by a weakened economic climate.
Given the challenging national economic climate, the Messiah College Class of 2010 fell
in line with the national average for securing employment within the first six to nine
months following graduation.
