A Career in the Special Events
Equine Industry
Students select from an established list of major
horse events and provide assistance to event
managers. These events provide insight into horse
show management, endurance ride requirements,
competitive driving specifications and Thoroughbred
sale horse preparation and exhibition. This Industry
level exposure is unsurpassed in acquainting
students with unimagined job opportunities within
the horse industry.
A career in the modern Equine Industry requires
more than the ability to ride horses. New technology
requires skills that SCC Equine students gain in courses
throughout this program, including use of computer
programs in facility and herd management, development
of current herd health programs and development of
hands-on skills necessary to be successful in this multifaceted field. Students are involved in the Industry
through volunteer work, course work at local events
and internships at local or national facilities.
The objectives of this program are to:
• provide students with the skills needed to compete for
careers in the Equine Industry,
• provide the community with horse-related continuing
education courses, and
• offer a curriculum that transfers to Equine Science
programs at major universities.
Faculty
Equine Science faculty members teaching these courses
are professionals, actively involved in the Equine
Industry. The program is headed by a full-time director,
who teaches in the program, directs students toward
successful completion of their studies.
The ideal climate of the Southwest, the area’s
exceptional horse show facilities, and the high
concentration of farms and individuals specializing
in various breed types and training methods make
Scottsdale a premier location for an equine science
program.
Equine Advisory Committee
SCC offers a two-year Associate Degree program
based on a broad study of equine management and
business practices, coupled with general education
courses necessary for a well rounded education. Upon
completion of the Associate Degree, students may
elect to work in the Industry or transfer to a four-year
university program.
A Certificate of Completion in Equine Science is offered
for individuals who wish to complete the equine classes
without the general education courses. Non majors,
such as community horse enthusiasts, may enroll in
individual equine courses as their interests dictate. The
curriculum is a generous blend of lecture, hands-on
courses, field trips and work-related internships.
A select and diverse group of Equine Industry and
academic specialists meet twice annually to evaluate
the direction of the Equine Science program. This
committee provides input for the program and
connections to the Industry that are valuable to
student success.
Internships/Practicums
A full- or part-time experience is an important
component of the Equine Science curriculum. Students
develop a more complete understanding of working in
the Industry under the guidance of a professional. This
experience in many cases leads to a full-time job offer
or valuable Industry contacts for future references.
