These tools are essential to understanding current processes and to redesigning processes for improved results. Process mapping is a visual display of workflow, identifying inputs, outputs, and the sequence of steps in a process. Benchmarking for improvement is a systematic approach to study best practices in order to adopt and adapt practices for enhanced performance. • Project Management Methods: The Project Management Institute (Art Gallery) Virginia Evans, Assistant Vice President for Integrated System Deployment & Support (PMI) is the leading membership association for the project management profession. The Project Management Body of Knowledge (PEMBOK) is an internationally recognized standard: IEEE Std 1490-2003 to the knowledge and practices of project management. An overview of the project management process, including initiating, planning, execution, controlling, and closing process groups along with associated tools will be shared. • Manage Change (Room 389) Tara Telfair, Director of Development Officer Training, Office of University Development Change management is a necessary component for successful organizational improvements. Structured approaches and strategies assist in managing resistance to change when transforming or amending a process. Topics will include the origins of change resistance, actions for guiding people through change, and ways to sustain commitment. Please turn over TIME EVENT 11:30-12:35 LUNCH EVENTS (Main Ballroom & Lounge) 12:45-1:50 • Speaker Leonard Sandridge, Executive Vice President and Chief Operating Officer • Showcase of Process Simplification Projects (Main Lounge) A poster session featuring a variety of process improvement projects at U.Va. in academic and administrative areas. Posters will summarize the purpose, approach, and impact of the project. These include: Records Management, Faculty Exit Procedures, System of University Reservations and Calendar of Events. Academic Certification, and Capital Project Authorization. AFTERNOON BREAKOUT SESSIONS • Management Methodologies in Practice at U.Va. (Main Ballroom—Breakout area) Balanced Scorecard, Gary Nimax, Executive Assistant to the VP and Chief Financial Officer Six Sigma, Priscilla Shuler, Manager, Quality and Performance Improvement National Association of College and University Business Officers: Business Process Redesign, Lea Moore, Coordinator, Process Simplification Methodologies are guidelines used to identify, analyze, and improve existing functions in support of workplace goals and objectives. Three approaches will be presented: Balanced Scorecard , Six Sigma; and Business Process Redesign. Balanced Scorecard is used by the Office of the Vice President and Chief Financial Officer and its reporting units. Six Sigma guides the Medical Center in its quality efforts. Business Process Redesign serves as the basis for the University’s Process Simplification efforts. • Team Dynamics and Facilitation (Art Gallery) Eric Coleman, Consultant, Leadership Development Center Teams are a common and useful means for executing improvement efforts. Participants will learn about team lifecycles, phases of team development, group dynamics, the role of a facilitator, intervention tactics, and techniques for effective meetings. • Measuring What Matters—Performance Measures (Room 389) George Stovall, Director, Office of Institutional Assessment Studies Jonathan Schnyer, Associate Director and Assessment Coordinator Performance measure data have multiple uses in process improvement work. Data are used to determine current processes in need of improvement, to assess the effectiveness of implemented improvements, and to monitor progress over time. This session will provide insights into defining appropriate measures and moving beyond data analysis to action. 2:00-3:00 CLOSING EVENTS (Main Ballroom) • Ask the Expert Panel Get guidance from real people leading innovation and change efforts. This will be a moderated dialogue in which participants will have an opportunity to pose questions to the experts about process improvement methods, practices, and tools. • Raffle Prizes will include improvement and innovation resource books. Attendees must be present to win.
