Guidelines on Calculation of Teaching Hours and Hourly Pay Rate for Teachers at I-Shou University Amendment ratified by President on May 8, 2000 Amendment adopted by the Executive Board Meeting on August 18, 2004 Amendment adopted by Executive Board Meeting on February 22, 2006 Amendment adopted on March 4, 2009 at the second meeting of University Administration Council at the second semester of the academic year 2008 I. The Guidelines on Calculation of Teaching Hours and Hourly Pay Rate for Teachers at I-Shou University (hereinafter referred to as the “Guidelines”) are enacted to standardize the calculation of the faculty’s teaching hours and hourly pay rate at every semester. II. In principle, the required weekly teaching hours for full-time teachers at the level of Professor is 8, 9 hours for those at the level of Associate Professor and Assistant Professor, and 10 hours for those at the level of Lecturer. The teaching hours mentioned above may be totalized with the teaching hours at the Division of Continuing Education. The teaching hours at the Division of Continuing Education shall not exceed half of the total teaching hours. III. A reduction in the required weekly teaching hours is governed by the following rules: 1. Teachers holding an administrative position: a. Heads at the 1st level of administrative units: 4 hours. b. Section Chiefs and Secretaries: 4 hours. c. Directors of the Institute and Chairs of the Department: 2 hours. d. Teachers who undertake a special task are eligible for a reduction in teaching hours under special approval of the University. e. Teachers who hold more than one administrative position are eligible for a reduction by a maximum of 4 hours. 2. Full-time teachers who have their teaching hours reduced pursuant to the Regulations for Reduction in Teaching Load of Faculty on Joint Research Project at I-Shou University are eligible for a reduction bay maximum of3 teaching hours and the weekly teaching hours shall be more than 3 teaching hours. IV. The extra teaching hours at daytime programs plus the teaching hours at the Division of Continuing Education shall not exceed 4 hours. The aforesaid rule does not apply to teachers 1 under special approval of the University. Due to special needs, teachers who have obtained approval from the University may have2 extra teaching to offset the required weekly teaching hours for the next semester. V. Full-time teachers who teach part time outside the campus (including the evening division and on weekends/holidays) shall techno more than 4 hours per week. For those teachers whose off-campus part-time teaching hours plus the extra teaching hours on campus exceed 4 hours, the hourly pay rates calculate by subtracting off-campus part-time teaching hours from 4. The aforesaid rule is not applicable to teachers who are invited to teach at off-campus mater’s programs or doctoral programs due to his/her prominent performance in research under special consent of the University. VI. Teachers who do not fulfill the requirement of weekly teaching hours shall make up the difference during the next semester. If teachers do not make up the difference for 2 consecutive semesters or resign at the second semester, they shall pay back the hourly pay for the teaching hours that have not been fulfilled. VII. The hourly pay for teachers who offer required experiment or practicum courses on campus shall be calculated on an hourly basis. However, no hourly pay is paid for extra teaching hours aside from 3 teaching hours per week. For teachers who offer elective experiment or practicum courses on campus, the hourly pay shall be calculated by half. To coordinate with the University’s policies, the aforesaid rule does not apply to teachers who have obtained special consent from the University. VIII. Off-campus practicum courses shall be applied for and scheduled before course arrangement at every semester. Teachers shall select a method for receiving the hourly pay pursuant to the regulations for off-campus practicum courses. The rule of off-campus practicum courses shall be prescribed separately. IX. The teaching hours of courses jointly offered by teachers shall be distributed among teachers and an “Application Form for Jointly Offered Courses” shall be filled in and submitted to the Curriculum Section to calculate for hourly pay rate. X. For teachers who offer “Modularized Instruction,” the teaching hours shall be less than 18 hours. The hourly pay for teachers who offer “Modularized Instruction” shall be calculated in accordance with their academic ranks, and a receipt for hourly pay shall be filled out and submitted to the Office of Accounting. For coordinating the University’s policies, the aforesaid rule does not apply to teachers who have obtained prior consent. XI. The hourly pay of full-time or part-time teachers shall be increased by 10% should the number of student enrollment of one course is more than 70. XII. Due to the special needs, the standard of hourly pay rate calculation may be subject to adjustments as approved by the University in advance. 2 XIII. The Guidelines become effective on the third day of promulgation upon adoption by the University Administration Council and ratification by President. Note: In the event of any disputes or misunderstanding as the interpretation of the language or terms of these Guidelines, the Chinese language version shall prevail. 3
