Guidelines on Course and Office Hour Scheduling of Full-Time
Faculty at I-Shou University

I.
As per Article 13 of the Rules of Appointment of Full-time Teachers at I-Shou University,
full-time teachers at the level of Professor and Associate Professor shall stay at the University
for at least four full days per week while teachers at the level of Assistant Professor and
Lecturer shall stay at the University for at least five full days per week.
II.
According to university regulations and rules, full-time teachers are obligated to arrange
office hours to assist (guide) students in their studies and thesis/dissertations (projects) and
counsel advisees on all aspects of campus life as an advisor, in addition to teaching.
III.
Full-time teachers shall offer courses at the University for at least 3 days a week, and the
teaching hours shall be no more than 6 hours per day. (Adjustments are possible should the
teaching hours of a full-time teacher is less than 6 hours because of holding an administrative
positions or being eligible for a reduction in teaching hours.)
IV.
Special course arrangements may be possible under special consent of the University should
the foregoing provision is not applicable and course attributes are formally recognized by the
University.
V.
Departments (institutes or centers) shall properly arrange daytime and nighttime courses by
taking in consideration the number of seats of each class room, equipment and facilities, and
the numbers of students enrollment (including repeaters and preparatory students) to
safeguard students’ right of education and maintain good learning efficiency.
VI.
Teachers who wish a change in class time after the class schedule is finalized shall elaborate
on changes and reasons. Only with the consent of the Chair of the department/Director of the

institute can they apply for a change. No change in class time is allowed after the end the
course add/drop period.
VII. Office hours are arranged once per semester along with the curriculum, and the results shall
be submitted to the Curriculum Section for future reference by the first 4 weeks of every
semester. Teachers’ office hours shall be announced in the offices of departments (institutes or
centers), on the website and in faculty offices.
VIII. The number of office hours shall be the same as that of teaching hours. For example, a teacher
who teaches for more than 8 hours per week shall arrange office hours of 8 hours. However,
the sum of teaching hours and office hours shall meet the requirements mentioned in the
provision I.
IX.
Teachers shall stay in their faculty offices during office hours for counseling purposes (those
who hold an administrative post may wait in the administrative unit for counseling). Any
change in the location for student counseling shall be announced in the faculty office.
Teachers shall inform the Chair of the department/Director of the institute and students in
advance should they cannot offer student counseling as scheduled for some reason.
X.
Teachers shall inform the Chair of the department/Director of the institute and students in
advance should they cannot give a lesson for some reason, and ask for a leaves, arrange for
class makeup or reschedule the class pursuant to university regulations. Teachers may make
up the class by e-Learning courses or teaching materials accredited by the Education Ministry.
Teachers are permitted to apply for making up a class twice per semester, with each session
lasting for 3 hours at most and shall apply to the Curriculum Section two weeks before class
makeup. E-Learning courses or teaching material for class makeup are available for 3 years at
most.
XI.
As for field trips, an “Application Form of Field Trip” must be filled in and submitted two
weeks before the field trip.
XII. The Guidelines become effective on the third day of promulgation after adoption by the
University Academic Council and ratification by the President.
Note: In the event of any disputes or misunderstanding as to the interpretation of the language or
terms of these Guidelines, the Chinese language version shall prevail.
