Article 1
The Regulations for English-Taught Courses at I-Shou University (hereinafter referred
to as the “Regulations”) are enacted to encourage faculty members to use English as the
language of instruction in an attempt to fulfill the University’s teaching philosophy,
elevate international competitiveness, reinforce the liberalization and internalization of
higher education, broaden students’ global horizons and strengthen their language
abilities.
Article 2
A list of English-taught courses shall be announced online before course registration.
English shall be the only working language that teachers use to lecture (including text
books), discuss with students and score students’ performance.
Article 3
Teachers shall fill out an Application Form for Offering English-Taught Course,
including the information on the teacher’s profile, course details and a syllabus (in
English). Teachers are permitted to apply for only one English-taught course per
semester. Teachers are barred from applying for the same English-taught course in the
following semester should they fail to satisfy the standards on Instructional Evaluation.
Article 4
The hourly pay for English-taught courses is increased by 50%. For teachers who do not
satisfy the required weekly teaching hours, these additional teaching hours shall be
incorporated into the weekly teaching hours before they are eligible to receive
additional hourly payments while other teachers are eligible to receive hourly payments
for additional teaching hours except for the four extra teaching hours stipulated by the
University.
Article 5
Departments and institutes (centers) shall assess the effectiveness of English-taught
courses whenever necessary, and the assessment results will be reference for future
curriculum planning and review. When courses are not taught in English as planned, the
Office of Academic affairs will change these courses into general ones.
Article 6
Teachers shall submit a report in duplicate, including a syllabus, teaching experiences
and suggestions related to an English –taught course, within one month after the course
is over.

Article 7
The Regulations are not applicable to courses that ought to be taught in English or are
offered by international teachers. However; these courses can be included in the number
of English-only teaching hours of respective departments, but no additional hourly pay
is paid to teachers, unless with special approval of the University and in line with the
University’s policies.
Article 8
Departments and institutes shall offer at least one English-only course per semester to
improve or test students’ English proficiency. When a college offers English-taught
courses, the number of English-taught courses offered by its subordinate departments
shall not be less than the number of the departments at the college. The number of
English-taught courses shall be increased annually, and the ability to teach in English
shall be considered one of the qualifications for faculty recruitment.
Article 9
These Regulations become effective on the third day of promulgation upon adoption by
the University Administration Council and ratification by the President.
Note: In the event of any disputes or misunderstanding as to the interpretation of the language or
terms of these Regulations, the Chinese language version shall prevail.
