Article 1
These guidelines are enacted in accordance with Article 26 of University Act and its
Enforcement Rules as well as the Degree Conferral Law and its enforcement rules.
Article 2
Unless otherwise stipulated, the master degree examination of each department
(graduate schools) shall be in accordance with the Regulations.
Article 3
The Master Degree Examination shall be held once per semester. Students who have
completed all the required courses and credit hours as stipulated by each graduate
institute in the 2nd semester of the 1st academic year, with the consent of supervisor
and the Chair (Director), they may apply for the Master Degree Examination in
accordance with the University’s academic calendar.
Article 4
The Master Degree Examination Committee shall be composed of 3 people (students
with more than two (including two) supervisors shall have 4 people in committee)
and shall be appointed by the President. The supervisor of the students shall be the
ex-officio representative but shall not assume the role of chairman. The chairman
shall be selected within the committee.
The member of Master Degree Examination Committee shall attend the examination
in person without appointing the delegate to act on his/her behalf in any reason. The
Examination Committee shall hire another external examiner. The examination shall
not proceed unless all the members are present.
There might be extra committee members in unusual cases but need to obtain
approval in advance.
Article 5
Members for the Master Degree Examination shall have expertise in the area related
to the student’s dissertation; furthermore, they must possess one of the following
qualifications:
1. Having been a Professor or an Associate Professor, and having been the teacher
of the related courses that the students focus on in his/her dissertation.
2. Having been an Academician, or a Research Fellow or Associate Research
Fellow of Academia Sinica who are expertise in the area related to the student’s
dissertation.
3. Having doctoral degree with significant contribution in the academic field.
4. Belonging to an uncommon or exceptional field, with significant contribution in
the academic field.
The criterion for qualification for the item 3 and 4 shall be enacted by the
Department (Institute) Affairs Council.
Article 6
The application qualifiers which review by the department (institute) shall submit the
information regarding the dissertation, abstract, method of examination, time,
location and the name list of internal and external examiner to the Office of
Academic Affairs for review one week after the prescribed deadline of application.
After approved by the President, the qualifiers shall be informed at least one week
before the examination.
Article 7
The dissertation which has once awarded with other academic degree shall not be
submitted again. The dissertation which written in other languages shall have
Chinese abstract attached.
Article 8
The Master Degree Examination shall include an oral defense and dissertation review.
The examination shall be conducted by oral defense and written examination might
be held if necessary. The examination grade of 70 points is considered satisfactory
and the full score is 100 points. The final score is the average of all the scores given
by each committee member. Only if all the scores are above 70 shall the final result
considered passed.
Article 9
After the Master Degree Examination is completed, departments (institutes) shall
submit the final score to the Office of Academic Affairs prior to the end of the
semester.
The qualifier shall submit the dissertation with approval signatures of the committee
members before January 31 (in the 1st semester) or August 31 (in the 2nd semester).
Students who fail to submit the document in prescribed period of time shall still
register in the subsequent semester and submit the dissertation prior to the deadline
in the same semester. Failure to submit the dissertation until the study complete, the
student shall be considered as unsatisfied in the master degree examination and shall
be withdrew from school in accordance with regulations.
The graduation months are scheduled in January (in the 1st semester) and June (in the
2nd semester).
Article 10
Postgraduate students who has applied for the Master Degree Examination but is not
able to take the examination, and is not withdrawing the schedule prior to the final
score result submitted the examination shall be regarded as failed.
Postgraduate students who fail the degree examination do not exceed the prescribed
years of study may apply to retake the examination one time only. The retake
examination shall only be allowed once. Students who fail again shall be withdrew
from school.
Article 11
The Postgraduate students who are qualified to the examination shall upload the
abstract and full-text electronic file before graduation.
Article 12
If there is plagiarism or fraud involved in the work of dissertation, once verified by
the Master Degree Examination Committee, the student shall fail the examination.
The case shall be submitted to Council of Student Affairs for further procedures. If
after the conferral of the degree, the university shall revoke the degree and issue a
public notice to announce the invalidation of the previously issued diploma.
Article 14
The regulations become effective upon the adoption by the University Academic
Council and the University Council, and submit to the Ministry of Education for
future reference. Any amendment to the Academic Rules shall follow the same
administrative procedure.
Article 13
In order to avoid unfairness, the relatives by blood or marriage within the third
degree of kinship or the people in interest shall not be the supervisor or the
committee member of Master Degree Examination. If such circumstances are found
the appointment shall be dismissed, and the score result shall be regarded as failed
after the degree examination is completed. If after the conferral of the degree, the
university discovers any interest involved, the student shall be ordered to return the
certificate of the graduation.
Note: In the event of any disputes or misunderstanding as the interpretation of the language or
terms of these regulations, the Chinese language version shall prevail.
