It was the first independent, degree-granting institution for research and training in public health. Since then, our work has expanded in scope and across the globe. Our microbiologists work to find a vaccine for malaria, while behavioral scientists research ways to discourage populations from smoking. Environmental health scientists work to discover which foods prevent cancer, while health policy analysts evaluate health insurance programs and make recommendations based on their findings. Epidemiologists identify trends in health and illness, looking for links, causes and interventions in areas such as HIV/AIDS, tuberculosis and infant mortality. And there is so much more. Join us as we look to another century of “Protecting Health, Saving Lives—Millions at a Time.” 1795 Johns Hopkins is born on his family’s tobacco plantation in southern Maryland 1873 Mr. Hopkins dies, leaving $7 million to establish the Johns Hopkins University and Hospital 1876 Johns Hopkins University is founded in Baltimore 1916 On June 13, Johns Hopkins University receives a grant from the Rockefeller Foundation to establish the School of Hygiene and Public Health 1920 The Certificate of Public Health program is established and William H. Welch founds the American Journal of Hygiene 1922 Biochemist E.V. McCollum and his team discover vitamin D 1939 The Certificate of Public Health (CPH) becomes the Master of Public Health (MPH) degree, creating the template for other public health programs around the world 1948 Immunologists David Bodian, Howard Howe and Isabel Morgan from the Department of Epidemiology, identify three types of poliovirus, laying groundwork that leads to the Salk polio vaccine 1980s Epidemiologist B. Frank Polk achieved international recognition for his AIDS expertise, devising studies of the natural history of the disease before the HIV virus was even discovered 1957 1976-1980 1963 1999 Alumnus Leroy Burney is the first Surgeon General to officially declare that cigarette smoking is a causative factor of lung cancer Toxicologist Anna Baetjer, one of the first scientists to identify the relationship between occupation and lung cancer, establishes a research and training program at Johns Hopkins in environmental toxicology 1966-1977 Dean Emeritus Alfred Sommer proves a 4-cent dose of vitamin A prevents blindness and dramatically reduces childhood mortality Virologist Keerti Shah coauthors the definitive epidemiology study linking cervical cancer to human papilloma virus (HPV), paving the way for diagnostic testing and the eventual vaccine 2001 Dean Emeritus and alumnus D.A. Henderson leads the World Health Organization campaign to eradicate smallpox The School’s name is changed to the Johns Hopkins Bloomberg School of Public Health to honor the support and contributions of Michael Bloomberg 1974 2006 Susan P. Eisenhower and approved by the university board of trustees on May 1, 1967. The society—the first of its kind in the nation—inducts former postdoctoral fellows and junior or visiting faculty at Johns Hopkins who had formative experiences at Johns Hopkins and thereafter gained marked distinction in their respective fields. Each year, the Society of Scholars Selection Committee elects a limited number of scholars from among the candidates nominated by Johns Hopkins University faculty. Since its inception, 642 individuals have been elected to membership in the society, including 16 members elected in 2016. At an investment ceremony held in the spring of each year, newly elected scholars are formally inducted into the society. Faculty members invest inductees with the Johns Hopkins Society of Scholars medallion and present them with an official certificate of membership. Alain G. The head of the mace displays the names of individuals who have served as Dean of the School and their dates of service. The symbols on the seal illustrate the School’s dedication to education, research and service in the diverse fields of public health through the promotion of health preservation, control of disease and delivery of health and medical services. The Regalia and Symbol The history of the academic attire can be traced to the medieval period when scholars were also clerics and wore the costume of their monastic order. The hood was originally a cowl attached to the gown, which could be slipped over the head for warmth in the unheated buildings in which they worked. From this necessity evolved the tradition of academic regalia which today is used to identify members of the academic institution by level of degree, academic field, and awarding institutions. The distinguishing mark of the gown is the sleeve: master—an oblong sleeve open at the wrist; doctor—bell-shaped sleeve with three velvet bars. Academic subjects are identified by the color of the hood trimming. The lining of the hood signifies the colors of the granting institution. The Johns Hopkins University displays a hood lining of gold. The color of the tassel denotes the degree. It may be black or gold thread or the same color as the hood trim. The colors associated with the different academic subjects are: FIELD ROBE TRIM HOOD TRIM Administration Black or Golden Yellow Peacock Anatomy Black or Golden Yellow Golden Yellow Bacteriology Black or Golden Yellow Golden Yellow Biochemistry Black or Golden Yellow Golden Yellow Biology Black or Golden Yellow Golden Yellow Botany Black or Golden Yellow Golden Yellow Chemistry Black or Golden Yellow Golden Yellow Dentistry Black or Lilac Lilac Engineering Black or Orange Orange Law Black or Purple Purple Mathematics Black or Golden Yellow Golden Yellow Medicine Black or Green Green Nursing Black or Apricot Apricot Optometry Black or Seafoam Green Seafoam Green Philosophy Black or Dark Blue Dark Blue Physics Black or Golden Yellow Golden Yellow Physiology Black or Golden Yellow Golden Yellow Psychology Black or Dark Blue Dark Blue Public Health Black or Salmon Pink Salmon Pink Public Policy Black or Peacock Peacock Science Black or Golden Yellow Golden Yellow Veterinary Medicine Black or Gray Gray Zoology Black or Golden Yellow Golden Yellow 50 Johns Hopkins Bloomberg School of Public Health International Declaration of Health Rights Composed by faculty and students on the occasion of The Johns Hopkins School of Public Health’s 75th Anniversary W e as people concerned about health improvements in the world, do hereby commit ourselves to advocacy and action to promote the health rights of all human beings. The enjoyment of the highest attainable standard of health is one of the fundamental rights of every human being. It is not a privilege for those with power, money or social standing. Health is more than the absence of disease, but includes the prevention of illness, development of individual potential, a positive sense of physical, mental and social well-being. Health care should be based on dialogue and collaboration between citizens, professionals, communities and policy makers. Health services should be affordable, accessible, effective, efficient and convenient. Health begins with healthy development of the child and a positive family environment. Health must be sustained by the active role of men and women in health and development. The role of women, and their welfare, must be recognized and addressed. Health care for the elderly should preserve dignity, respect and concern for quality of life and not merely extend life. Health requires a sustainable environment with balanced human population growth and preservation of cultural diversity. Health depends on the availability to people of basic essentials; food, safe water, housing, education, productive employment, protection from pollution and prevention of social alienation. Health depends on protection from exploitation without distinction of race, religion, political belief, economic or social condition. Health Requires Peaceful and Equitable Development and Collaboration of All Peoples 2016 Convocation 51 Environmental Impact By printing on this combination of papers, the Bloomberg School was able to save: Trees: 7 Total Energy: 3 million BTUs Greenhouse Gases: 675lbs CO2 Wastewater: 3,659 gallons Solid Waste: 245 lbs The JHSPH 2016 Convocation Program was printed on FSC-certified Rolland Opaque 50% pcw.
