Dinner and meeting
Happy Anniversary, VCPWN!
On May 10, 2007, VCPWN celebrated its twenty-fifth anniversary
with many of the founding mothers in
attendance. The first to honor the beginning of this dynamic organization
was Ventura County Supervisor Kathy
Long, who read a Proclamation that
honored the 25 years of contributions
to the County of Ventura by VCPWN
The Keynote speaker was the Honorable Colleen
Toy White, who
spoke of the
challenge and
biggest obstacle
women face in
the professional
world: gender
bias. A woman
is seen as
“well-liked,”
while a man is
“respected.” A
man is “assertive,” while a
woman with the
same qualities is viewed as “aggressive.” Judge White’s answer to this
bias is this: women don’t have to join
the Old Boy’s Club. By establishing
their own record of success all women
will gain greater credibility.
Her own mother became a role
model when she chased a peeping tom
with a butcher knife at a slumber party
the young Toy was hosting! She didn’t
wait for a man to rescue her, she called
on her own inner fortitude.
A recent Time magazine named the
world’s 100 most influential people.
While several women were honored,
including Hillary Clinton, Queen Elizabeth II, Condoleeza Rice, Oprah
Winfrey, Tyra Banks and Indira Gan-
dhi, women were in the minority on the
list. Yet, Judge White noted that it was a
woman–Lisa Randall–who became the
first female theoretical physicist at Harvard (Ed note: Randall was included in
the latest Time list published July 4,
2007), and that many women are now
leading the way in companies such as
eBay, Southwest Airlines, and
Build-A-Bear–that’s progress, but much
more is
needed.
The next
speaker of the
evening was
Anne Marie
(Spraul) Stuart, the
VCPWN
Charter President. Anne
Marie reminisced about
the first-ever
election, held
in April, 1982
after a meeting the previous November
where 300 women were invited to come
and put on a women’s business conference. One-hundred showed up for dinner, which seemed a promising enough
beginning to schedule a second dinner
in January, and that’s when it was decided to start an organization. That respectable number had swelled to 307
only 15 months later!
Anne Marie spoke with great affection about her experiences with the
fledgling organization, and said that
even after she had moved out of
Ventura County, Focal Points kept her
connected.

From the Outgoing
Prez, Shirley Lorraine
This has been
an exciting year
for VCPWN. We
are steadily growing and the number of guests who
attend the dinner
meetings has increased. We are financially healthy.
We had several fun and successful social and fund-raiser events, in addition
to our always-wonderful silent auctions and the newest addition, the
50-50 drawings.
To cap it all off, we celebrated our
25th year of existence. What an achievement. The outpouring of enthusiasm
was simply overwhelming and it was
a grand party. Personally, I felt renewed, validated and invigorated over
what we have done and all that we
plan to do in the future.
It has been a pleasure to serve
VCPWN as your President. So many
members voiced support and encouragement over the past year–which

alone was reward enough. As we
move into our 26th year, our leadership
just keeps getting better. As VCPWN
evolves as an organization, we only
get stronger. Thank you all for doing
your part to maintain this vital part of
our lives.
From the Incoming
Prez, Lisa Ross
Our new board of directors met last
night. What a great group of energetic,
creative people we have leading the
charge! We have exciting new programs that our directors will be introducing to you at the upcoming
meetings that center around participation within the organization.
These programs are opportunities
for personal and professional growth,
as well as for nurturing new friendships among our members.
There are “teams,” or committees,
that would benefit from your support.
If you have a knack for special events,
networking , hospitality or mentoring,
please let the appropriate board director know of your interest in helping.
We’d love to have you on board.
One of the opportunities many of
our members are excited about is the
chance to present educational programs at our monthly meetings.
VCPWN is opening its program forum to current members who have
educational, relevant programs to
share with its membership.
For further information and consideration, please ask Carol Powell
for a Presentation Proposal.
We are very excited about our focus on growth and member service
this year. We are honored to have
many new and renewing members,
and hope that this upcoming board
year gives you the personal and professional boost that you deserve!

Anniversary celebration continued from page 2
It has always been about growth, both professional and
personal, by educating ourselves, supporting each other,
and sharing our resources, be they time, talent, energy, or
money.
Merle (Edgar) DiVita, a Founding Mother and Navigator who continues to actively support VCPWN, raised a
toast, in which the 107 attendees joined her, expressing a
wish for the future growth and ongoing success of the organization.
Perhaps one of the most touching events of the evening
was the announcement of the Arlene Goldberg Scholarship at Ventura College. Donations are needed to fund this
scholarship, which is in the name of one of the charter
members of VCPWN.

But even then the celebration wasn’t finished. On Saturday morning, a lively group gathered for a champagne brunch at the Sidecar Restaurant in Ventura for

New member welcome, continued from page 2
Lisa Corbett & Theresa Henuber
We’re so excited to be a part of VCPWN and have enjoyed meeting so many fabulous businesswomen! I, Lisa
Corbett was born and raised in Pennsylvania, making the
cross country move in 1992 where I eventually landed in
Santa Barbara and began my love affair with the Central
Coast area. During college I spent many years working in
various positions in the food and restaurant industry until I
got married to my dear husband of 9 years and started a
family. I have 3 beautiful children and have enjoyed being a
stay-at-home mom since 1999. To supplement my income, I
became an independent bookkeeper and continue to service
a few bookkeeping clients. During my husband’s career as a
police officer, he had the honor of training a new police officer, Erik Henuber. During their many hours in the police
car they realized that our families had children around the
same age. We quickly became
close family friends and even
took the plunge into
homeownership by moving
into the community of Santa
Paula near them.
[email protected]
Theresa was born in
Scottsdale, Arizona and moved
to Ojai in early childhood. She
married a wonderful man after
he finished basic training in
the Marine Corps. After September 11th, and with her husband called to active duty, she realized that she needed to
finish her bachelors in business. It was especially important
since she had two gorgeous daughters and was facing a
very real possibility of raising them alone. Luckily, Erik’s
tour yielded no significant injuries and he returned home
safely. Since they have added another beautiful daughter to
the family. [email protected]
Our friendship has grown through the years and we’ve
often talked about what kind of business we’d like to be involved in, with the thought of maybe owning a restaurant
in all of our minds at one point in our lives. When we came
to Dream Dinners as customers, we were so impressed with
the idea, the service it provided and its mission, that we
wished we had been on board from the beginning. Luckily,
we found out about the opportunity to purchase this
store and over time, all the
pieces have all fallen in to
place. We have spent the past
7 months learning so much
about what being a business
owner means and have continued to learn that there is so
much more to learn! We look
forward to meeting more of
the members of VCPWN and
learning from and sharing
with each and every one of
you!

The Baby Boomers are a
powerful entity that has
been at the forefront of
major societal changes.
They will not allow themselves to be diminished
and overlooked as some of
their predecessors might
have; they will not fit the
social model of their grandparents. It’s a
good idea to examine our “taken for granted
assumptions” and make the necessary adjustments, for them, as well as for ourselves.
There is unlimited potential for addressing
their needs in a meaningful and productive
